One of the most promising strategies in the fight against cancer is nutritional ketosis. Nutritional ketosis shifts your body into a metabolic state that starves cancer cells while also strengthening normal cells.

Glucose is one of the preferred sources of energy for cancer cells. By entering nutritional ketosis through fasting or a ketogenic diet, your body will use ketones rather than glucose for energy. This weakens cancer cells, strengthens healthy cells, and puts your body in a stronger position to fight cancer.

Nutritional Ketosis

Nutritional ketosis is a state in which the body utilizes ketones rather than glucose for fuel. Ketones produce significantly more energy than glucose with less metabolic waste. In nutritional ketosis, you become metabolically flexible and your body will function at a more efficient level.

Two ways to achieve nutritional ketosis are by implementing a ketogenic diet and fasting (time restricted eating). The ketogenic diet is a high healthy fat, low carbohydrate, and low to moderate protein nutrition plan. The macronutrient ratios for a ketogenic diet are:

  • Healthy Fats: 70-80% of calories
  • Protein: 20-25% of calories (less if fighting cancer)
  • Carbohydrates: 5-10% of calories

The ketogenic diet can improve your health in many ways, including reducing inflammation and free radical production, stabilizing blood sugar levels, and reducing insulin levels. Incredibly, a low-carb, ketogenic diet may reduce your risk of chronic disease and extend your lifespan.1

Nutritional Ketosis and The Metabolic Theory of Cancer

Nutritional ketosis is a powerful tool in the fight against cancer because cancer is a metabolic disease. The metabolic theory of cancer was first espoused by German researcher Dr. Otto Warburg around 100 years ago. This theory was based on Warburg’s discovery that cancer cells have abnormal or damaged mitochondria.2 Mitochondria are rod-shaped organelles that are the powerhouse our cells. They convert oxygen and nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Dr. Warburg and his colleagues observed that the function of the mitochondria in cancer cells differs from normal cells. Normal cells use their mitochondria to burn oxygen and glucose together for energy. In contrast, cancer cells are fermenters. They ferment lactic acid from glucose as a substrate even in the presence of oxygen. Warburg’s observation that cancer cells ferment glucose to lactic acid using glycolysis even in the presence of oxygen is called the “Warburg effect”.

Warburg proposed that cancer cells have defective respiration. Researchers disagreed with Warburg because it appeared that cancer cells have normal respiration (oxidative phosphorylation). However, Dr. Warburg’s theory is now being proven with greater understanding of the mitochondria and epigenetics.

Modern pioneers in the field of cancer research, including Dr. Thomas Seyfried, view cancer as a disease in which damaged mitochondria prefer glucose and glutamine for fuel. These researchers have expanded Warburg’s research to fill in the “missing link” in his theory.3

The latest research shows that cancer cells do not have normal respiration. Instead, cancer cells have damaged respiration and must ferment to survive.

They ferment glucose and glutamine with lactic and succinic acids as the byproducts.

Oncogenes cause this fermentation which enables glucose and glutamine to replace oxidative phosphorylation. Cancer results from damage to the respiratory function of the mitochondria with a compensatory fermentation.

How Nutritional Ketosis Fights Cancer

Cancer cells cannot use ketones for fuel because of their mitochondrial defects. They require an abnormally higher amount of glucose than normal cells and have more insulin receptors than normal cells. The increased amount of insulin receptors and hyperactive glucose consumption of cancer cells leads to continued stimulation of cancer development and growth.4

Being in a state of nutritional ketosis deprives cancer cells of glucose while protecting and strengthening normal cells which can use ketones for energy.5 Cancer cell glycolysis and proliferation are inhibited.6

Additional anticancer effects of nutritional ketosis include:

  • Increasing cancer cell oxidative stress
  • Being anti-angiogenesis
  • Lowering insulin levels
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Promoting apoptosis (programmed cell death)
  • Acting as an inhibitor of histone deacetylases (which reduces the ability of cancer cells to proliferate).7,8

Nutritional ketosis enhances these therapies while protecting healthy cells, inhibiting cellular proliferations, and increasing apoptosis.

Key Cancer Mechanisms Affected by Ketosis

Nutritional ketosis impacts four key pathways for cancer development: AMPK, IGF-1, mTOR, and the P53 gene.

#1. AMPK

Limiting carbohydrates with a ketogenic diet can activate the AMPK (Adenosine Monophosphate-activated Protein Kinase) pathway. AMPK is an energy regulating molecule that signals ATP production. Studies show that AMPK is involved in cancer cell growth and survival.10

AMPK activity is decreased in cancer. By upregulating the AMPK pathway, nutritional ketosis deprives cancer cells of glucose. This inhibits cell proliferation and tumor growth.

#2. IGF-1

IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor) is a growth stimulating hormone that regulates the reproduction and regeneration of cells. While elevations are normal in children, this can be a catalyst for cancer growth for those not in rapid developmental stages of life. Protein restriction, fasting, exercise, curcumin, resveratrol, and many other plant-based compounds can inhibit the production of excess IGF-1.

#3. mTOR

mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) is a physiological pathway that regulates cell growth and replication. The activity of mTOR is often upregulated in cancer and can cause rapid cell division.11

High levels of insulin from a high sugar and refined carbohydrate diet and excess protein may elevate mTOR activity. Excessive protein consumption can also stimulate this pathway. Nutritional ketosis helps to prevent this pathway from contributing to cancer growth.

#4. The p53 Gene

The p53 gene is frequently mutated in cancers. This important gene repairs defective DNA and allows the cell to go back into its normal cycle of growth and reproduction. If the defective DNA cannot be repaired, the p53 signals for cellular apoptosis (programmed cell death), halting the potential for cancerous growth.10Nutritional ketosis can help restore proper p53 function.

7 Ways to Implement a Plant-Based Diet Ketogenic Diet

A plant-based ketogenic diet is the best nutrition plan to fight cancer. This nutrition plan includes abundant amounts of healthy fats and low-carbohydrate vegetables and herbs, limited low-glycemic fruits, and small amounts of protein.

#1. Healthy Fats

It is important to consume plenty of healthy fats on a plant-based ketogenic diet. The best sources of healthy fats are found grass-fed butter and ghee, coconuts, coconut butter and oil, MCT oil, pastured eggs, olive oil, olives, avocados, avocado oil, and high-fat nuts like macadamias. These healthy fats should be around 80% of your total calories.

#2. Low-Glycemic Vegetables and Fruits

A variety of low-carbohydrate, colorful vegetables are included in the anticancer ketogenic diet. Vegetables have antioxidants and phytonutrients which downregulate cancer growth by acting on different pathways in the body.

Vegetables to include are broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, cucumbers, leafy greens like kale, collard greens, Swiss chard and spinach, and allium vegetables such as garlic and onions. Sprouts, especially broccoli sprouts, are great to incorporate into a cancer-fighting diet.

Small amounts of low-glycemic fruits are included, such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, lemons and limes, avocados, and coconuts. Herbs and spices like turmeric, cinnamon, rosemary, oregano, basil, cilantro, sage, and thyme have healing properties and should also be included. It is very important to eat organic herbs, fruits, and vegetables.

#3. Protein

The amount of protein on an anticancer ketogenic diet is less than allowed for a healthy, active individual. High amounts of protein overstimulate the mTOR pathway and IGF-1. This can stimulate rampant cell reproduction processes.

Excess protein also stimulates gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis is a metabolic pathway which results in the body making glucose from non-carbohydrate sources (like amino acids) into glucose. This will raise blood sugar and take you out of ketosis.

On a ketogenic diet for cancer, a person should consume around 0.5 g of protein per kilogram of body weight. For example, a 160-pound person would consume only about 36 grams of protein per day, calculated as follows:

Divide weight by 2.2 lb/kg to calculate body weight in kilograms,
Body weight in kilograms is daily protein requirement:
160 lbs / 2.2 kg = 73 kg body weight
.5g x 73 kg = 36.5 g of protein

With this low amount of protein, you should hydrate well throughout the day, and increase overall vegetable consumption and fat intake. Excellent sources of protein are organ meats and pastured, organic eggs.

#4. Glutamine and Cancer

The amino acid glutamine plays a key role in many bodily functions. It also has a role in the metabolism of certain cancers that are fueled by glutamine in addition to glucose. Glutamine-dependent cancers include immune system cancers (leukemia, myeloid cancers). The ketogenic diet may not be as effective with these cancers but may help by reducing inflammation in the body.

#5. Press-Pulse Strategy with Ketosis

The ketogenic diet is used by researchers as part of the “press-pulse” therapeutic strategy for managing cancer. With glucose and glutamine being the prime fuels driving the dysregulated growth of cancer, this mechanism may reduce or eradicate tumor cells with minimal patient toxicity.

The “press” of the press-pulse strategy is to deplete cancer cells of glucose with a restricted ketogenic diet or therapeutic fasting. This step will destroy some cancer cells. The “pulse” is stimulating cancer-specific oxidative stress such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Since there is no diet to target glutamine, cutting-edge research is now exploring the dosage, timing, and scheduling of drugs to target glutamine without harming our normal cells. With glutamine being such an important amino acid, the mechanism to target glutamine without inhibiting these other functions is the current challenge.

#6. Glucose to Ketone Ratio

The Glucose Ketone Index (GKI) is a way to monitor whether you have reached a therapeutic level of ketosis. This index was developed by researchers to track the ratio between blood glucose and ketones.12

The GKI is used to measure how tumors respond to fasting and the ketogenic diet. Researchers have found that a ratio of 1:1 is most effective for shrinking tumors.

To calculate GKI, divide the blood glucose level by 18. Then divide that number by the blood ketone level. For example, if a person’s blood glucose is 64 and their ketone level is 3.1, the GKI would be 1.15.

GKI: (64/18) / 3.1 = 1.15.

#7. Fasting to Shift into Ketosis and Fight Cancer

Fasting is the quickest way to metabolically shift your body into ketosis. In a fasted state, your body uses ketones rather than glucose for energy.

A 5-day water fast will get you into ketosis and help you reach an optimal GKI for fighting cancer. Fasting also fights cancer by slowing down mTOR and IGF-1 expression, improving AMP-K expression, stabilizing the p53 gene, and increasing autophagy.

Important Strategies for Optimizing Ketosis

The following strategies will help you be more successful in nutritional ketosis:

Consume High-Quality, Organic Foods

When fighting cancer, it is critical to maximize nutrition and minimize toxins. To get the maximum benefits from a ketogenic diet, it is important to consume healthy fats, clean protein sources, and organic, antioxidant-rich vegetables, fruits, and herbs. You do not want to consume processed animal products or commercially raised meats or dairy. It is also critical to avoid processed foods and vegetable oils that are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Super Hydration

Proper hydration is key while in nutritional ketosis. Clean, filtered water should be the primary source of hydration, along with herbal teas and broths.

For water, drink at least half of your body weight, and preferably your whole-body weight, in ounces per day. This amount of water may seem excessive, but as long as it comes with enough minerals (adding in a pinch of good salt), it is extremely cleansing to the body. Super hydration also improves your energy and reduces hunger and cravings.

Be sure to filter chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical drugs from your water with a high-quality filter. Reverse osmosis water with added minerals is best.

Herbal teas with immune-stimulating superfood herbs are also great sources of hydration. They contain antioxidants and phytonutrients which can facilitate deeper cleansing and detoxification.

Replenish Minerals

Replenishing minerals is essential while following a ketogenic diet. The body excretes excess sodium and minerals due to the drop in insulin. This can be particularly important during the initial adaptation phase to avoid symptoms of the keto flu.

Use a high-quality pink or gray salt and drink organic bone broth throughout the day. Celery and cucumber are also excellent to consume because they are low in carbohydrates and have natural sodium.

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise can be beneficial when you are in nutritional ketosis. For high-intensity interval training, limit training to 15-20 minutes, 2-4 times a week. This short burst exercise increases AMP-K, promotes metabolic flexibility, and increases oxygenation of tissues. However, doing more can raise cortisol and shift you out of ketosis.

Low-intensity exercise is also helpful. One of the best forms is barefoot walking outdoors which has the added benefit of contact with free electrons from the Earth. These electrons support your electromagnetic frequency, which calms your stress response and improves healing and wellbeing.

Improve Bowel Movements

Some people on a ketogenic diet struggle with constipation. This can increase stress hormones and pull you out of ketosis.

Consuming plenty of fibrous vegetables, fermented foods, water, and minerals can aid the digestive system and improve bowel movements. Stress inhibits digestion, so eating in a relaxing environment can help with digestion by putting your body into a resting state.

Use MCT Oil

MCT oil and digestive support can be very helpful while on a ketogenic diet. Producing ketones can stress the body, particularly for people with mitochondrial dysfunction. MCT oil is easily converted into ketones and helps to alleviate this stress and improve your state of ketosis. If you are having trouble with digestion on a ketogenic diet, supplementing with Betaine HCL, ox bile and digestive enzymes can be helpful.

Less Stress, More Sleep

Minimizing stress and optimizing sleep are important for maintaining an optimal state of ketosis. Stress relieving strategies include moderate exercise, being in nature, stretching, prayer or meditation, journaling, and practicing gratitude.

Restorative sleep facilitates healing and counteracts stress. Sleep is essential for your body to function optimally and deficiencies in sleep are associated with many health problems.

Good sleep practices include being in bed before 10 pm and sleeping in a dark room with the temperature between 60-65 degrees. The Cancer-Fighting Benefits of Flaxseed

Over the past few years you’ve likely read or heard that flaxseeds are good for you. You may not have a clear understanding, however, of the many health benefits of flaxseed and why they play an important role in your anti-cancer diet.

What is Flaxseed?

From the name, you can tell that it is the seed of the flax plant. Its fibers are woven to make linen fabric and the oil (referred to as linseed oil) is used in wood finishing.

It’s the seeds, though, that are the stars of this pretty, ornamental plant. Flaxseed sometimes imparts a mild, nutty essence when added to food but other ingredients easily overshadow the taste. This allows you to add it to recipes without really altering the flavor.

What Makes Flaxseed So Healthy?

Flaxseed has an amazing amount of nutrients and is the best source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fats are healthy fats shown to reduce levels of cholesterol in your system. Other sources of omega-3s include fatty fish and walnuts. Flaxseed also contains nine amino acids that, when appearing together, make a complete protein like those found in dairy and meat.

This allows your body to efficiently absorb the available nutrients contained within its tough exterior. The shell is where the fiber originates so make sure your seeds are milled or processed properly. Flaxseed oil capsules, available in most health food stores, may not provide the benefits you’re looking for. Processing removes the crucial lignans and unless they’re added back to the oil, you won’t get the full benefits of flaxseed.

Ultimately, you’re better off consuming the seeds themselves. This doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience! Add a tablespoon of the seeds or powder to a smoothie. Sprinkle it into your oatmeal for a nutty punch of flavor. You can mix it into some mashed sweet potato and you’ll never even know it’s there. Just because a cancer-fighting food is healthy doesn’t mean it can’t also taste delicious!

Store the seeds or powder in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer. Because of their high oil content, they can spoil if kept at room temperature. Consider buying whole flaxseed in bulk and separating into smaller containers. Grinding them is simple if you have a coffee grinder at home and only takes a few quick pulses.

If you are hesitant about the flavor, you can take a capsule of ground flaxseed with one of your daily meals. Remember that you need to find ground flax pills not flax oil pills because the oil doesn’t contain the protein or the fiber of the seeds.

Research continues on the benefits of flaxseed and the results look promising. Early studies have proven that it is a valuable addition to a healthy, cancer-free lifestyle. The lignans, phytoestrogens, proteins, and high fiber content all work in conjunction to protect your body.

Ty Bollinger: In this final installment of The Politics of Cancer, G. Edward Griffin brings this story back to our current medical model.

G. Edward Griffin: So, what happened? Well, they did upgrade the technical quality of medical education in America, and for that, I think we were grateful. The next thing that happened is the staff and the curricula of these institutions became totally oriented towards drugs. And the third thing is that as a result of that, the students that go through these institutions come out the other end totally educated, if you want to say that word, in the operation of pharmaceutical drugs. They know drugs backwards and forwards, up and down, inside and out, but they know nothing about basic nutrition.

Many doctors that I’ve talked to have said “Yes, I think my wife knows more about nutrition than I do.” And they’re not kidding, because they don’t get any of that in these medical schools. Why? Because that’s not where the money is.

So, the final result of all of that is that these doctors come out of these institutions without even knowing that they have been converted into salesmen for the pharmaceutical industry. And so, when you go to your average doctor today, I don’t care what it is, if it’s a headache, a hangnail, or cancer, they’re going to write a prescription of some kind for you. Because that’s all they know how to do.

Now that’s the reality, and I think the doctors that are at this conference will confirm that totally. And even the ones that don’t like what I’m saying will have to confirm it because it is a fact. It’s a historically-documented, documentable fact.

And that’s how it happened. Now that’s the short course, of course. There’s a lot of detail, rich detail, a lot of drama, a lot of conflict going on behind the scenes, which I hope you’ll enjoy reading. It’s all documented in my book. But that’s the short course. That’s the outline.

So, how does this affect cancer? I think the best example is to tell you briefly a little story that happened between 1972 and 1977 at one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the world, the Sloan Kettering Institute.

Laetrile, in those years, was already being used by a lot of people, a lot of doctors using it, quite a few in the United States, as a matter of fact. And certainly, there were quite a few in Mexico, and in Germany, and other countries around the world. And patients were coming back from these treatments deliriously happy because they were told they had only a few months or a few weeks to live in some cases. Not all of them made it, by the way.

Let me just interrupt there for a second, because the statistics are very interesting on this. Now it’s true there have been no double-blind studies that I’m aware of, but there have been lots of clinics that have been treating their cancer patients for years, and they keep records, and they have their own statistics. And I’ve been allowed to examine those statistics.

And here’s what they’re almost always about, within a few percentage points are the same. The average person that goes to alternative cancer treatments, they go in as a last-ditch effort. They’ve already tried everything else, and it’s failed. They’ve had their surgery, had their chemotherapy, had their radiation. And if they’re still alive at the end of that, somebody says “Well, hey, have you tried alternative therapies? Have you tried laetrile or something else? Well, what have you got to lose?”

Well at this point, they have nothing to lose. So, that’s how most patients turn to these alternative therapies. Now in that group, the cure rate, the survival rate if you want to call it that, is not so high. It’s 15%. That means 85% don’t make it. So, why on earth would you want to turn to a therapy with such poor response?

It’s because if they didn’t, none of them would make it. When you consider the group, the class that that is, 15% is an amazing number. There’s no oncologist in the world using clinical treatments that are approved by the establishment that can come anywhere close to that kind of a statistic.

Now to round this out, there is a growing number of people, because of conferences like this and things they’ve read, I hear about them because they’ve read my book and they tell me about it afterwards, now these people are turning to alternative therapies as a first response instead of a last response.

Now what are those statistics? It just flips over. 85% return to normal health, and unfortunately, about 15% don’t make it.
So, that is what was going on in that period, 1972 to 1977. I’m going to make sure I—okay, I’ve got a few more minutes. And so, the establishment was getting very concerned about this growing group of people who were singing the praises of nontoxic therapies, unorthodox therapies. And they decided they had to do something about it, they had to discredit it.

Now I’m talking here about laetrile, because that was my—the focus of my study, but I think you’d find a similar story in almost any field that you want to turn to, any therapy that you want to turn to that is of the natural category.

Here’s what happened. They decided they had to have an institution test it, and then they would publish the test and solve the issue once and for all. Does laetrile work or not? So, they turned it over to Sloan Kettering, and it went to the laboratory there under the direction of their top scientist, Dr. Kanematsu Sugiura, a Japanese fellow who was highly regarded in the whole world actually. He was known because they knew that if he conducted a mouse experiment or a rabbit experiment on cancer treatments and so forth, you could count on it, it was accurate, it was repeatable. Well, I won’t go into all the evidence behind that. He was number one in his field. Dr. Sugiura was it.

Well, okay, let’s cut to the chase. Dr. Sugiura set up his mouse experiments, and here’s what he found. This is his report, his initial report. He had five conclusions.

  1. Laetrile improved the general health of the mice.
  2. It appeared to relieve pain.
  3. It inhibited the growth of tumors.
  4. It stopped the spread of tumors.
  5. And it acted as a cancer prevention.

And he concluded with these remarks, now this is Sugiura himself speaking about himself. He says,

Dr. Sugiura has never observed complete regression of these tumors in all his cosmic experience with other chemotherapeutic agents.”

Now that’s just the beginning. So, you think “Oh, victory. Problem is solved.” You do not understand the forces that are opposed to you, ladies and gentlemen. Like I did in the beginning, see? If you think that was the end of it, listen. To appreciate what happened next, we have to realize that the JD Rockefeller Sr. and his son Jr., began donating to Sloan Kettering in 1927. And in the 1930s, they donated the block of land on which Sloan Kettering now stands. Now that might imply they have some interest in this.

Okay, well back at that time, there were three of them on the board of directors of Sloan Kettering. It was James, Laurance, and William. And of course, their role there was to guarantee efficiency in philanthropy. Now Sugiura’s findings did not please the board of directors. And so, they were not interested in publishing the report. They were not interested in a substance that cannot be patented. You can’t make a profit on something that anybody can produce and compete with you.

And so, I’d like to just stop for a moment on that thought and share something tangentially with you. In 1974, Congressman John Kelsey used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the board minutes on that date, the board of Sloan Kettering. And here is what he found.

Sloan Kettering is not enthusiastic about studying amygdalin, but would like to study cyanide-releasing drugs.”

Now if you understand what that means, then you understand everything that you need to know about the politics of cancer.
And it goes beyond that because it means that, you see, without official studies, without jumping through the hoop of FDA approval, which costs many, many millions of dollars now to prove—supposedly it proves efficiency, efficacy, and safety, which they don’t prove either one. But it costs many millions of dollars. And that keeps all the small players out. Only the big companies can afford that. It’s a sort of public relations fee, you know?

And it also means that anything that comes from nature, nobody’s going to spend that kind of money because they can’t afford it. If your competitor can produce the same product, if it’s an apricot seed, how can you spend $20 million proving that it’s safe and effective? How would you ever get your money back?

So, that means, ladies and gentlemen, that there will never be any studies done by the FDA that prove safety or efficacy of anything that comes from nature.

Coconut Oil Benefits: The Incredible Power of Coconut…

In the 1960s, food manufacturers wanted consumers to buy their margarines and hydrogenated oils. To do that, they had to “discredit” the products people had always used in their homes to prepare their food.

Olive oil, coconut oil, and lard were no longer “good for you,” they said. The marketing campaign for their synthetic products began and coconut oil was portrayed as an artery-clogging and cholesterol-raising substance. People were told that it contained too much saturated fat and contributed to heart attacks.

Flash forward four decades later. In the midst of an obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer explosion, scientists discover that it is not healthy fats found in coconut oil and other natural products that are bad for you.

It was, in fact, the very goods the food manufacturers had been pushing on their consumers for thirty years. The trans-fats contained in these “fake foods” were incredibly dangerous to your entire body. High fat, high sugar, and high carb diets were put under the microscope and found guilty.

Over-processed, pre-made synthetic foods filled with additives, preservatives, dyes, and high levels of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other unnatural fillers were found to be the true culprits of the Western world’s health decline.

After all these years, coconut oil is getting the positive scientific attention it deserves. There’s a reason cultures around the world have been using it for thousands of years. The benefits of coconut oil have filled entire books. There are very good reasons for that. Let’s talk a little about the history.

Coconut Oil’s Bad Rap

How did the food manufacturers manage to discredit an oil used by civilizations throughout history that didn’t experience the rate of disease that we in the United States currently face?

Dr. Thomas Brenna of Cornell University explained the magic trick the food industry pulled on this amazing oil.

Most of the studies involving coconut oil were done with partially hydrogenated coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil, which has not been chemically treated, is a different thing in terms of a health risk perspective.”

His research made it clear that natural, organic coconut oil was not the culprit. Once coconut oil is chemically altered to a hydrogenated state, it is no longer natural or organic. They are two very different products and have opposite effects on the human body.

Dr. Brenna’s findings were supported by Dr. Ancel Keys.

In the 1950s, Dr. Keys suspected a link between heart disease and hydrogenated oils. He began a series of studies to test his hypothesis. He investigated a Wisconsin dairy farmer whom initially had cholesterol levels that neared 1000, exceptionally higher than the United States “normal” range of 200-230.

Dr. Keys put him on a diet that replaced margarine with coconut oil. His cholesterol level dropped to 300 in one week. He changed the man’s diet again, adding back the margarine that had been part of his daily food intake. Within days, his cholesterol went back up. The topic of cholesterol and heart disease is a topic for another article altogether. Despite what you hear, the research actually indicates that cholesterol does not cause heart disease.

This particular experiment raised public awareness and there were health concerns by consumers. The vegetable oil industry proceeded to divert the public’s attention by criticizing and attacking all tropical oils – particularly coconut oil. The soybean industry followed suit. Soon enough, the public quieted down and the manufacturers went back to “business as usual.”

A group of researchers published a paper in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1981 about their study of two groups of Polynesians. Both groups were instructed to consume coconut oil as their primary source of energy. The results showed positive circulatory and vascular functions in both populations. There was no indication that high saturated fat intake caused harm.

The “French Paradox” – a study on low death rates related to coronary heart disease despite increased intake of saturated fat – confirmed their findings.

Healthy Fats in Coconut Oil Fight Disease

The Unique Coconut Oil Benefits

With the advancement of modern technology and breakthroughs in science, numerous studies in the past decade have proven coconut oil to be a “good” saturated fat and incredibly healthy.

Pure coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that is converted to monolaurin by your body. In fact, 50% of coconut oil is lauric acid, a compound usually found in human breast milk, which makes it one of the best food sources of this nutrient available. Lauric acid is beneficial in deterring parasites, bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and viruses.

Coconut oil also consists of 86.5% saturated fatty acids, 5.8% monounsaturated fatty acids, and 0% trans-fat. It is comprised of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), contrary to vegetable or seed oils consisting of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs). LCFAs are stored in the body as LDL cholesterol, contribute to hardening of the arteries, and strain the pancreas and liver.

MCFAs support the immune system with its antimicrobial properties. They are easily digested and converted to energy.

Studies indicate that MCFAs help increase feelings of fullness and lead to a reduction in calorie intake when compared to the same amount of calories from other fats. When MCFAs are metabolized, ketone bodies are created in the liver. Ketone bodies have been shown to have a strong appetite reducing effect. Coupled with its stimulatory effect on metabolism, it’s easy to see why coconut oil makes it easier to maintain a healthy weight.

In the 1930s, Dr. Weston Price, a dentist by profession, traveled throughout the South Pacific to examine traditional diets and their effects on dental hygiene and overall health. He observed that people whose diets contain high amounts of coconut products were healthy and trim. Despite their high fat intake, there was no existence of heart disease.

Another study in the 1940s found that when farmers used coconut oil as a fattening substance for their livestock, the animals became leaner instead. The high levels of MCFA in coconut oil maintain the thyroid gland’s optimal control of metabolism, ultimately resulting in weight loss.

In the past decades, society has been misinformed to believe that eliminating saturated fats from their diet was necessary for healthy living. We’ve been told that shunning these fats would prevent the occurrence of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Raw Food vs Cooked: Is What’s on That Plate…

Almost everyone loves a nice, hot meal. Casseroles, stir fries, soups, stews, you name it… if it’s steaming, hearty, and brimming with tasty ingredients, most people will choose it over a plate of bland, cold veggies the majority of the time. But what many people don’t know is that the cooking process (as good as it makes many foods taste) changes the composition and structure of raw food. In fact, it can kill off a key nutritional element that our bodies need for proper digestion and assimilation: enzymes.

Though they don’t get nearly the attention they deserve, enzymes are the energetic stimuli that convert food nutrients into fuel that our bodies can actually use. They’re naturally present in rich supply in raw foods straight from nature.

On the other hand, foods that are cooked, pasteurized, and/or processed contain few or no enzymes. And yet these are the types of foods that many people rely on for daily sustenance, unaware of the fact that they are aren’t getting the nutrition they think they’re getting due to enzyme deficiency.

These “dead” foods are devoid of enzymes and place a heavy burden on our bodies’ own enzymatic reserves which have to be tapped in order for dead foods to be digested and passed through the system. Our bodies are programmed to correct this deficiency by working extra hard to redirect their inherent enzyme stores. But they can only do so for a time until finally reaching a point where they, like processed foods, end up depleted of enzymes.

It’s right around this time when enzymatic failure begins to rear its ugly head − manifesting as indigestion, constipation, and eventually much worse… chronic disease and death.

Raw Food Enzymes: Eating for Life Rather than Death

If this is the first time you’re hearing about enzymes, you’re certainly not alone. Despite the fact that they’re among the most important dietary co-factors for staying nourished, enzymes are usually one of the last things people think about when they eat. That’s because public health officials and others dispensing dietary advice in the mainstream rarely mention enzymes − probably because they themselves don’t even know what enzymes are and why they’re critically important for good health.

Either that, or they don’t want to admit publicly that the conventional ways of processing, packaging, and serving food destroys its enzyme content. Perhaps if more people knew the truth about this, it would drive them to make different food choices.

While it won’t do the big food conglomerates any favors, the truth of the matter is that enzymes are absolutely critical for life. Eating food raw, or as close to raw as possible, helps ensure that its nutrients are fully bioavailable for maximum health.

These are a number of enzymes necessary for the foods you eat to be digested and used by the body. These include:

  • Amylase, glucoamylase, and phytase being among those that break down carbohydrates;
  • Alpha galactosidase, hemicellulase, and invertase that break down sugars;
  • Bromelain, papain, protease, and peptidase that break down proteins; and
  • Lipase that breaks down fats

At What Temperature Do Enzymes Die?

You should know that any food that’s been heated beyond 118 degrees Fahrenheit has already undergone some level of enzymatic breakdown. If you think about it, most convenience foods, fast foods, and processed foods are cooked at temperatures well beyond this. Even traditional cooking methods render food that, enzymatically speaking, is as good as dead.

Now, this isn’t to say that your body can’t still derive nutrients from dead food. It can through its own input of digestive and metabolic enzymes. But this isn’t an ideal or sustainable situation, as the body’s own enzyme reserves are limited and can also become depleted with excessive use.

Eating raw foods, or what I like to call “eating for life,” means that your body won’t have to deplete its enzymes stores because raw food has its own enzymes. Raw food constitutes the full package your body needs to ensure that nutrients get to wherever they need to go without overtaxing it. Eating processed and overcooked foods, on the other hand, or what you might call “eating for death,” forces the body to have to compensate for enzyme deficiency by substituting its own enzymes.

Simply put, food is supposed to give life to our bodies with ease. But it can’t do this effectively when the foods we eat are lacking in enzymes, forcing the body to supplement this deficiency with its own metabolic enzymes.

This diversion of the body’s metabolic enzymes to fill the enzyme gap creates a situation where the body loses some (or in a worst-case scenario, all) of its ability to supply enzymes for energy production and cell regeneration and detoxification, leading to all sorts of health problems.

Eating Raw, Juicing, and Supplementing With Enzymes

This is obviously a situation you want to avoid, which is why it’s important to make sure that you’re getting enough enzymes in your everyday diet. One obvious way to do this is to simply eat more raw foods, and especially raw juices freshly-pressed from vegetables and fruit. The reason why juicing is particularly beneficial as far as enzymes are concerned is that it concentrates not only nutrients but also enzymes from fresh produce into an easy-to-drink juice that you can take on the go.

Tip for getting maximum nutrition from fresh juices: Use organic produce, consume as soon as possible after juicing, and store any leftovers in glass containers instead of plastic.

Another way to ensure that you’re getting enough enzymes so as not to overburden your body’s enzyme stores is to supplement with a food-based enzyme formula. By taking a full-spectrum enzyme supplement with every meal − and especially those that involve a lot of cooked and processed food items − you’ll help ensure that your body is fully able to use its own enzyme stores for bodily maintenance and repair, rather than to digest enzyme-deficient food.

One of the great things about supplemental enzymes is that whatever enzyme surplus your body ends up with beyond what’s necessary to digest enzyme-deficient foods can be used by the body to perform various digestive and metabolic tasks. Video Transcript: The Politics of Cancer – The Science of Cancer Therapy – Part 1

Ty Bollinger: Have you ever thought of cancer as something that is “missing” instead of something that shouldn’t be there?

Charlene Bollinger: In this video, G. Edward Griffin kicks off his 3-part presentation on this eye-opening topic. You don’t want to miss this closer look into the science behind the politics of cancer.

G. Edward Griffin: Alright. Well, actually speaking of parts, I am going to divide my talk into two parts. The program indicates that I’m speaking on the politics of cancer, which indeed I am. But I think it requires a little perspective.

You’ve got to talk a little bit about the science of cancer therapy in order to put the politics into perspective. I suppose for this audience, it’s really not necessary, because you’ve been hearing about the science of cancer therapy all day long, and for the last couple of days. You already have imbued in your brains so much more information than I could impart in a few minutes.

But I think for the sake of the integrity of my presentation, I’d like to cover just a little bit about the science of cancer as I have learned about it. And then that will put me into a better position to answer the question, the big, big question, as to why is it that my doctor doesn’t know about these things? And the answer is, of course, because of the political side.

I learned when I got into it—by the way, I think I mentioned earlier in the panel discussion, I got into it because of a good friend of mine, Dr. John Richardson, who was one of the first doctors to use laetrile in the world, probably. And he brought me in to see if I couldn’t help him explain what he was doing and why he was doing it. I’m happy to say that his two sons right here, Charlie Richardson and John Richardson, would you please stand and take a bow?

Thank you. Their father, John Richardson, was a great mentor to me. I learned a lot. I mean I cannot begin to tell you. I’ve forgotten more than I could even tell you about. But he was a great leader and one of the most principled men I have ever met. He stood firm when many others, most others, did in fact weaken and yield to the pressure of the organized medical establishment. But he stood firm on principle, and I think that we should know more about Dr. Richardson. And I’ll do my best to spread that story through our own news sources and our publications. Because he I think is a role model for us all.

But back to my presentation, which I said is divided into two parts, the science and the politics. And I can—I’ve condensed this whole thing into 35 words. So, this is going to be a real short presentation. It’s the Q&A that will last on and on and on.

And believe it or not, you can take a complex topic like this and condense it down, down, down and down. People asked me to condense the topic of the Federal Reserve, which is one of my other favorite topics, and I say “That’s easy. You can reduce that into three words. “It’s a scam.”

But you see? It’s real easy.

Well, for this story, it takes 35 words, and here it is:

A control for cancer is known, and it comes from nature.

But it is not widely available to the public because it cannot be patented, and therefore, is not commercially attractive to the pharmaceutical industry.

And there you have it. Any questions? I’m through with my speech.

So, now for my quick overview of the science, as I have learned from my mentors, like Dr. Richardson and Dr. Krebs, and so many others who have been researchers and practicing physicians, taught me everything I think I know about this. And it all makes sense to me after a while.

And that is that there are generally two views of cancer, as you folks in this audience already know. There’s the orthodox view, and what we sometimes call the alternative view. I tend to call it the reality view.

But the orthodox view is that the cancer is the lump or the bump, and that’s it. And so, if you want to control or cure cancer, you get rid of the lump or the bump. And so, we have all these modalities for that, we have surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Either cut it out, burn it out, or poison it away. Then once you get rid of the lump, well, look. The doctor will say “I think we got it all.”

But as you know, statistically, and from your own personal experience, you know that quite often it comes back. Why? Because in the view—the reality view, the lump or the bump is not the cancer at all, it’s the symptom of the cancer.

And so, the reality doctors that I learned everything from taught me that the lump or the bump is a symptom, and that therefore, we should be more concerned with the question “Why is that lump or bump growing there in the first place?”

So, that’s one of the basic views. And when you dig down deeper then, the next discovery is to see the most amazing thing, and that is it looks like cancer really is natural. It’s something we all have in one form or another all of our lives, from the instant we’re conceived. Because this general view that I learned was that cancer is merely the healing process gotten out of alignment. It’s gone awry for some reason. We’ll talk about that reason in a moment.

But it’s the healing process, it’s the replacement of damaged or dying tissue. We’d be—we couldn’t survive without this healing process, the regeneration of new tissue. If I scratch my hand right now, I’ve scraped away maybe thousands, who knows how many, little tiny cells.

And probably, my body right now is responding to that scratching syndrome, or symptom—signal I should say, and it’s already, there are chemical process and, believe it or not, electrical processes undergoing, triggering a very complex mechanism that nobody really understands, but they’ve got a little clue here. We know it involves the healing process, it involves estrogen and things like that.

And it triggers the stem cells to start recreating or differentiating and producing the cell, in this case, skin tissue. Now if I had damaged my lung tissue because I was smoking, the body would be triggering the creation of lung tissue. And if I had been subjected to radiation, wherever radiation seemed to have the most effect and destroyed tissue, my body would be trying to create new tissue to replace that.

And this works just fine. We’d be in sad shape without this process, right? So, in fact, it’s the very process that takes place even at the embryonic stage, when the embryo is conceived, it starts to multiply and divide, and that’s the same process is involved. It’s called the trophoblastic thesis of cancer, for those of you who want to get into it deeply.

But it’s amazingly logical, and the evidence behind it is so strong, that even now, some of the orthodox universities are acknowledging that cancer is trophoblast. Which was one of the things they used to condemn the alternative doctors for saying years ago. “These people actually think that the embryonic process is related to cancer in some way?” And now some of the most prestigious universities are saying “Yep, it’s true.” It all goes back to Dr. John Beard a century or so ago.

Anyway, all of this is a little bit off the track. The main thing that I’d like to impart is what I learned. The most shocking and then encouraging thing is that we all have cancer in a way, because it’s part of the healing process. We need not fear it. What we need to fear is why does our healing process get out of whack? Why doesn’t it stop healing?

When we’ve done the job, when that skin tissue is replaced, there are signals that say “Okay, you can go back to bed now and sleep.” But what happens if those signals aren’t there? Well, the body continues to do its healing process, and healing—it’s called over healing, and then we have a name we put to it and call it cancer.

Now that’s an amazing conception that orthodox physicians do not share. They think that it’s the lump or the bump, and it has to be cut out or burned out, where alternative, or reality doctors, are thinking in terms of why isn’t the body, the healing process, performing normally?

And then we come then to the next amazing discovery, at least my amazing discovery, was that cancer was not caused by something. It is caused by the lack of something. Very profound difference. A lack of something that should be there in a normal, natural, healthy organism. And we’re talking about it. But the healing process, of course, is the natural thing. But why isn’t the healing process working? Because of a lack of something.

Well, there could be many things that are required for a functioning healing system. Most of it involves the immune system. We’ve heard that said here many times, that if you have a healthy immune system, you’ve got cancer pretty well licked. And that is true.

But there are other factors, too. I found that one of the most common factors that was missing was a dietary factor. We’ve been talking here a lot about how important our food is. Why is that? Because there are dietary factors, there are microelements, micronutrients in non-GMO food, in organic food. There are things that we don’t even know that are there. They’re still discovering complex molecular compositions in normal food. We have no idea how important those are.

But I can tell you one thing. If we don’t get them, we get sick. That’s all we have to know. We don’t have to be geniuses, we don’t have to go to med school to know that we need good, healthy food, whatever that—whatever we define that to be.

So, it’s a deficiency disease in most cases. That is the most common thing we find missing from all cases of cancer, and that’s why it’s relatively common to see that cancer can be reversed, even advanced cancer, if a person restores their diet to a natural state. Because even though they don’t know what’s in there, they’re getting it if they get to a good, healthy source of food.

Yield: 12-15 servings

Hearty Bone Broth and Watercress Soup {Recipe}


  • 4 cups bones (organic & grass-fed!)
  • 5 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • ⅔ cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cups cauliflower, chopped
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 cups potatoes (or sweet potatoes), chopped
  • 2 cups watercress leaves
  • ¼ cup chives, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder


  1. Add 4 cups of bones to a pressure cooker. Then, cover the bones with water and one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
  2. Cook the bones on high pressure for 6 hours.
  3. Drain the liquid from the bones. Then, pour the broth to a pot on the stove on medium heat.
  4. Add the chopped onions, chopped cauliflower, peas, chopped potatoes, watercress leaves, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Simmer the contents of the pot for 30 minutes. Stir the soup occasionally.
  6. Serve hot and garnish with chopped chives.

Natural Killer Cells: How to Keep Them Healthy So They…

Of all the cells we have floating around in our bodies, about 2 billion (roughly 5-15 percent of the total) are known as “natural killer” (NK) cells. The name makes them sound dangerous – and indeed they are, but only to cancer cells and other pathogens that can hurt the body!

NK cells are a critically important component of our “innate immune system,” so maintaining a good NK cell level is important for everyone. And especially if you are on a cancer-healing or prevention path of any kind, a healthy amount of properly functioning NK cells in your system is absolutely vital.

Follow the steps below to make sure you have plenty of active NK cells in your system and that they are operating at their best in order to hunt out and destroy any cancer cells that may be lurking in your body.

What are Natural Killer Cells?

Natural killer cells are a type of lymphocyte or white blood cell that is part of the lymphatic system. NK cells have the important job of “patrolling” your bloodstream and are on constant lookout for foreign invaders and cancer cells. They are formed in the bone marrow, lymph nodes, tonsils, thymus, and spleen and can also be found in the liver, intestine, skin, and lungs.

Did you know that there are cancer cells developing in your body at this very moment? But if your NK cells are healthy, strong, and plentiful, you have nothing to worry about. These microscopic “exterminators” have the ability to “control both local tumor growth and metastasis,” according to a comprehensive report published in the Journal of Biomed Biotechnology in 2011. Metastasis refers to the spread of cancer cells from one part of the body to another, usually via the lymphatic system and the blood.

NK cells block the growth and spread of cancer through their ability to directly cause cellular cytotoxicity and death in cancer cells.

Briefly, here is a step-by-step overview of how NK cells work:

Step 1. NK cells patrol the body and bloodstream looking for the “bad guys,” including viruses, bacteria, foreign matter, and of course, cancer cells.

Step 2. Once an NK cell spots something that looks out of the ordinary, it calls its friends into action. A pack of NK cells is formed and together they squirt a toxic substance directly at the unhealthy cell.

Step 3. This toxic substance, once it hits its target, goes to work to penetrate the skin of the invading or cancer cell, causing it to quickly “implode.”

Step 4. The NK cell then releases a hormone that will put the call out to other immune system cells, which then enter the area and “eat up” the remains of the unhealthy cell.

Just how does an NK cell know the difference between a healthy cell that’s a normal part of the body and a cancer cell? Natural killer cells have a built-in “detection and communication” system that can talk to the nucleus of a suspect cell to find out if it is normal or unhealthy. Based on that information, they determine if they will attack or not. Now THAT’S a smart cell!

(Note – the nucleus is the control center of every cell in the body, including cancer cells. It contains DNA and controls the production of genes and proteins by the cell.)

In fact, for years researchers have been stumped as to exactly how NK cells can so specifically target unhealthy cells while leaving healthy cells alone.

Although much progress has already been made into finding out what makes these cells so unique in this regard, ongoing research continues to shed new light. Cancer researchers hope that further investigations into NK cells will lead to new strategies for dealing with cancer cells more effectively.

Steps You Can Take to Keep Your Natural Killer Cells Healthy and Strong

Here are ten ways to keep your NK cells healthy, strong, and plentiful:

#1. Keep Your Gut Healthy.

65-70% of your immune system is housed in the lining of your intestinal tract, including a fair amount of NK cells. Maintaining a balanced amount of gut flora in your intestines is essential for proper immune system functioning and to ensure that your NK cells are working efficiently.

Avoiding sugar, processed foods, and simple carbohydrates as much as possible, taking a daily probiotic and consuming prebiotics such as fermented foods as well as bone broth can all help to not only boost your immune system, but also repair and prevent conditions that can lead to leaky gut syndrome.

Intestinal distress conditions such as leaky gut are believed to be the foundational cause of autoimmune disease. Studies such as a 2013 investigation conducted by the University of Washington have already established a clear link between autoimmune issues and impaired NK cell production, as well as low NK cell functionality.

#2. Reduce Your Overall Toxic Load.

As we age, we are exposed to more and more stressors in life. The unfortunate result of this exposure is a process called immune senescence, which is a general decline in overall immune system function. A typical example of immune senescence would be the “reawakening” of the chicken pox virus in an older adult in the form of shingles.

A part of age-related immune system decline is probably because of the lower effectiveness and production of NK cells. Some of this is unavoidable as we age, but there are also many things you can do to maintain your immune system integrity and keep your NK cells healthy.

First of all, be aware of the toxic effects of stress and how you respond to the stressors in your life. Stress responses and the cascade of hormonal releases they can trigger have been directly linked to lowered immune function.

Get into a daily routine of stress management by using techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique (or “Tapping”), prayer, meditation, stretching / yoga, or walking in nature as a way to nurture yourself and “decompress.”

Also, be aware of how you are exposing yourself to outside toxins through what you eat, if you still have amalgam fillings and root canals, what sundry products you put on your body, what household cleaners you use, and what toxins you may be exposed to in your community and in your workplace.

Take measures to reduce your toxic load as much as possible through using natural products and “going organic,” as well as removing any heavy metals from your mouth. Then establish a routine detoxification regime for yourself through the use of gentle cleanses that include supplementation, enemas, and sauna sessions.

All of these healing modalities have been documented as extremely effective for relieving stress, healing the body, and boosting the immune system.

#3. Raise Your Melatonin Levels Through Quality Sleep and Supplementation.

Melatonin, a hormone that is produced by the pineal gland, is a powerful cancer inhibitor in and of itself, especially when it comes to breast cancer.

Studies have shown that it has the ability to literally “put cancer cells to sleep.” It also appears to have an effect on cancer stem cells, according to a 2016 Brazilian study published in the peer-reviewed medical journal Plos One.

If you think you may be deficient in melatonin, be sure to get your levels checked regularly and consider a quality supplement, especially if you suffer from insomnia.

#4. Eat More Organic Blueberries.

Blueberries are not only super-tasty, they have also been shown to double the amount of NK cells in your system. A joint study conducted by Appalachia University, the University of Montana, and Vanderbilt University studied the NK cell count of trained runners who consumed blueberries and those who did not. They found that “daily blueberry consumption for 6 weeks increased NK cell counts.” They also found that upping the number of blueberries per day reduced oxidative stress and increased the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines

(Note – Cytokines are small proteins secreted by immune cells that affect other cells in the body.)

#5. Add Some “Spice” to Your Diet.

The anti-cancer properties of “super spices” like turmeric have been thoroughly established. But did you know about the healing power of black pepper and cardamom, in particular, for boosting the immune system and enhancing the effectiveness of NK cell function?

According to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food which focused specifically on these two spices, their immune- regulatory effects were conclusively proven. However, the researchers were surprised at the effect these two spices had on NK cells in particular.

“Remarkably, it is evident that black pepper and cardamom extracts significantly enhance the cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells, indicating their potential anti-cancer effects,” the report states. “Our findings strongly suggest that black pepper and cardamom exert immunomodula- tory roles and antitumor activities, and hence they manifest themselves as natural agents that can promote the maintenance of a healthy immune system.”

#6. Up Your Beta-Carotene Count.

Foods that are high in beta-carotenes such as sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, and spirulina can stimulate NK cell activity. An interesting study done almost 20 years ago and published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition compared the effectiveness of NK cells treated with beta-carotene and vitamin E, respectively, when these NK cells were interacting with human and mouse model lymphoma cells. The study researchers found that both vitamin E and beta-carotene-infused NK cells displayed enhanced cytotoxic activity against lung cancer cells.

#7. Eat More Garlic and Mushrooms.

Garlic is rich in ajoene, allicin, and thiosulfinates, all sulfur-rich compounds that can boost the immune system. A study conducted by Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran and published in the journal International Immunopharmacology found that sulfur-containing compounds in garlic can stimulate NK cell production and activity. They also found that certain compounds in garlic directly blocked the growth of breast cancer cells in mice directly.

In addition, mushrooms, and especially mushroom extracts, are said to be rich in beta- glucans, which have been proven to increase T-cell counts as well as NK cell production. T-cells are another type of lymphocytes (white blood cells) that are critical for immunity. A 2009 study at the University of Hong Kong found that beta-glucans can trigger several immune receptors, including those on macrophages and NK cells.

A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Oncology found that the immune-boosting properties of beta-glucans may specifically help to suppress endocrine-resistant breast cancers by regulating breast cancer gene expression.

Multiple studies have also noted the fact that different sources of beta-glucans have differing potencies – so be sure that if you opt for a beta-glucan supplement, you get one that you know is from a pure source and that the product does not contain fillers. One excellent choice is 7M+ from Organixx.

#8. Make Sure You’re Getting Plenty of Selenium.

Selenium is a vital mineral for immune system function in general as well as for many other biological processes in the body. Multiple studies since the early 1990s have linked selenium with increased NK cell activity in particular, including a 1996 study conducted by New York University which looked at NK cell production in the spleen. According to the researchers: “Dietary supplementation with Se [Selenium] resulted in a significant increase in the lytic activity of activated NK cells.”

Interleukin-2 receptors are a type of protein expressed on the surface of immune cells which respond to a substance called IL-2 and helps cells of the immune system to communicate with each other.

These receptors stimulate movement towards sites of inflammation, including areas where cancer cells may reside. Selenium’s effect on immunity and in particular NK cell activity has also been connected directly to improved breast cancer prognoses.

#9. Want to Really up Your NK Cell Count? Consider Enzymatically Modified Rice Bran.

According to an in-depth report written by Life Extension International in January 2015, Enzymatically Modified Rice Bran (EMBR) has been shown to increase NK Cell activity by up to 84%. A study conducted by the European Cancer Research Institute in 2013 focused on the effects of the substance MGN-3, found in EMBR, on patients with multiple myeloma (myeloma is a form of cancer that effects blood plasma). The researchers found “a clear increase in NK activity in MGN-3-treated patients compared to the placebo group.”

In addition, an unpublished in-house study conducted by Daiwa Pharmaceutical Co., a Tokyo-based natural products company, showed that a dose of 500 mg/day of EMBR given to healthy participants who were 45 to 55 years of age resulted in a three-fold increase in NK cell activity within three weeks, with no known side effects.

EMBR is available in supplement form and is available from Source Naturals as well as in a product called BioBran from Daiwa Pharmaceutical company. If you do a search in Google or on Amazon for BioBran, you will find it available for purchase.

#10. Consider these Other Powerhouse NK Cell Stimulators.

Other NK cell stimulators include vitamin C, hydrogen peroxide, and hypothermia modalities.

Vitamin C is a well-known powerhouse of the immune system. According to a report published in the journal Immunopharmacology and Immunotoxicology, “Vitamin C in high oral dose was capable of enhancing NK activity up to ten-fold in 78% of patients” who had originally been exposed to high levels of toxins.

Hydrogen Peroxide has been proven to stimulate NK cell production while alkalizing the whole body. For a gentle at-home alkalizer, mix one part 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide with 10 parts water. (Make sure you’re getting the food-grade peroxide, not the kind commonly available in drug stores). Begin with just a few drops in a glass of water and gradually increase to one (1) teaspoon in water, once daily.

Finally, raising the body temperature through modalities such as far-infrared sauna sessions, healing baths, heliotherapy, and the use of a Biomat has been directly linked to increased immune function. In fact, according to Dr. Nobuhiro Yoshimizu, MD, PhD, author of The Fourth Treatment for Medical Refugees, for every one (1) degree that the body temperature is raised, there is a 40% increase in immune function! Other NK cell stimulators of note include Echinacea and Panax Ginseng.


Without a doubt, the two billion or so natural killer cells that are currently residing within your body and blood are the true “superstars” of your immune system. No matter what your health challenge may be, or if you just wish to be proactive with prevention, upping your NK cell levels naturally using the various approaches I have described above will not only help to boost your immunity in general… it may also help you prevent and even heal cancer in your body.

Are You Winning the Cancer War? One Survivor’s…

Have you taken on your own personal “War Against Cancer”? Do you have a plan of attack? Are you making a declaration but aren’t sure how to attack the source?

After speaking with many people of all ages and walks of life, the one thing I notice is how we all point the finger at something or someone else as the cause of disease. We fail to understand the biggest step we all need to make: taking responsibility for the disease in our body.

Not all of us are the initial cause of the disease taking up residence in us. Take me, for example. I didn’t plan to inhale asbestos fibers and end up with mesothelioma (aka asbestos cancer).

But that’s not an excuse I can use for the breast cancer. The reason comes down to lifestyle choices that I made on a daily, minute-by-minute basis. Looking back, there were always plenty of signs right in front of my eyes – but failure to notice was the biggest culprit.

Barbara Gannon speakingHave you ever sat back and pointed the finger at circumstances in your life? “My job is stressful, my home life is stressful, my family is out of sync causing stress” and so on? Stress, stress, stress!

In other words, are you pointing the blame everywhere else, but not looking at yourself? If you have done so, have you now made the choice to stop living in the “dustbin of past mistakes” – whether they’re your own or others?

All I can tell you is that you must focus on where you’re going and what you’d like to see happen, rather than having your eyes glued to the current circumstances. Stop looking in the rear-view mirror, look forward, and take back your power!

But how do I do that, you ask?

First, take some time out for you, and don’t shift blame. For example, “the oncologist is not listening to me,” or “nobody cares if I live or die.” Or thinking of all the people you spent time with or doing things with only to find they aren’t there as friends and supporters when you need their friendship the most, etc.

We need to stop holding onto grudges; we need to FORGIVE!

It amazes me how unforgiveness in our lives tends to cause disease in the areas of our body that are affected by cancer. I went through a situation many years ago in which my husband and I were forced to move to a new country due to circumstances that were not our doing. As a result, I felt torn away from family and friends, which broke my heart. During this time, my husband and I each lost a parent and did not have the opportunity to have our final goodbyes, which led to more heartbreak.

When we eventually returned to Australia, I was already ill, unaware of the extent of the dis-ease.

My Moment of Clarity

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, the wonderful, integrative GP I saw took me aside very early the first morning and said to me, very directly, “where is the cancer?” I told him where. Then he asked, “what or who in your heart have you not forgiven?”

What!!! My first thought was, “what’s this got to do with me being here?” I burst into tears and spilled out what I had harbored in my heart for many years.

I fell down, spoke to the situation, forgave it, asked God to heal me, and lifted my spirit up to win the war!

At that point, cancer lost any grip it had on me. I BECAME THE STORM! No longer beholden to a situation from 20 years prior but refreshed by grace and mercy to stand up strong.

I was emboldened in the simple knowledge that by forgiving the situation, the person, and the run-off effects, I was empowering myself to meet this “fight for my life” head-on and believe with full faith that I WAS HEALED!

I reminded myself that the battle had already been done. I was just faith walking in action. You too can win this war!

A Real-Life Perspective on Disease

If you have unforgiveness in your life, it creates bitterness, hatred, angst, and anxiety. It infects your life, your relationships, the way you see the world, and how you interact with everyone and everything in it. You are in a high state of anxiety. Do you get it now? You must forgive!

Be encouraged and BE THE STORM!

I want to see you emerge with a strategy that enables you to say, “I’m too valuable to die, too tenacious to wait on anyone’s mercy, and too creative to accept neglect as my destiny!” Only when you are willing to stop blaming yourself and others, and take responsibility for your life and situation can I guarantee: God will empower you to make the changes.

Change the terms of your future as dictated by others, become empowered, and BE THE STORM!

Ty Bollinger: What is homeopathy? How does it work? Did you know that until the early 1900s, homeopathy was a mainstay in most U.S. medical schools? But now the FDA is doing everything in its power to make sure you do not have access to homeopathic remedies. Keep watching as Dr. Frank King, author of The Healing Revolution, shares from his 40 years in natural healthcare diving deeper into homeopathy and the Law of Similars.

Dr. Frank King: As we know, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathy has been around for over 200 years and used globally by physicians. It’s a fabulous healing art, and uses what we call the Law of Similars: it’s a pharmacological Law of Similars. Matter of fact, two of the most powerful, healing, curative techniques are actually bastardized homeopathy but, they’re using the Law of Similars. And that is something that homeopaths are against but they’re using these Laws of Similars, and it’s called immunizations.

Immunizations do work but they put such ugly things—they use live viruses. They do not use the full homeopathic principle, but you can see the power of what it does in stopping a number of diseases in the world. However, homeopaths were so against it, they found remedies through the process of immunizations that actually antidote all the negative side effects of immunizations. They actually helped detoxify us from the negative effects of immunizations as well.

Here you can see, and I want you to look at this as—the history of homeopathy is very deep. It has actually been validated through the test of time, and you’ll see with the hospitals around, throughout the U.S. and the world, that look at these Typhus epidemics and pandemics that have occurred in the history. In the allopathic hospitals you’ll see the results of mortality, the death rate, and compare to the homeopathic hospitals that we’re seeing the same cases, the same seriousness of cases.

Look at the cholera changes here… Differences. Look at the history both in Europe and U.S. Look at malaria in the U.S., 50% mortality rate, 5.6. Diphtheria…. Look at the Spanish flu, the great pandemic, here’s specifically how many cases, homeopathically, that were treated. Look at the difference, nearly 30% here and just a hair over one percent mortality in the homeopathic hospitals.

Homeopathy is for real. It’s energy medicine, yes, and it works deep into our control networks of our bodies to give us a very powerful healing effect. You’ll see here, we’re going to speed this up, but you’ll see, homeopathy is very popular throughout the world; Europe, South America…

You’ll see a lot of research. I put a few things up here for cancer, you know you guys have been so in depth, so much information I don’t want to overload you, you can always look at these, they’re referenced here.

Look at this–these cancers–70% results over a five year study, just using one ingredient homeopathically, that’s called Psorinum.

And when you hear these terms, you may be scared: you can’t pronounce it, don’t take it. These are Latin terms—don’t be afraid of the Latin terms.

Actually, the number one cause of death today is not cancer—no more. Well it’s not heart disease; it’s iatrogenic disease, that creates cancer. Okay, so iatrogenic disease is from mistakes from physicians and from side effects of drugs. When you total those together the death rate is higher than heart disease or cancer.

Here, heavy metal toxicity. You’ve heard a lot about that. We have a heavy metal detox product, very powerful and what it does lead to is this thing called candida. Candida, fungus, yeast all the same family, same thing. I’ve been dealing with this candida since the late 70s. We’ve been—how many people have walked this tightrope diets and had to live on this tightrope diets? Feel like you’re imprisoned.

We are here to liberate people. When you get all the pieces put together again, you can be liberated. You don’t have to live like you’re in a prison any longer. You know, you can be healed, and homeopathy has really helped to open the door to that.

To massaging and finding tender spots along the spine where your alarm points are and your acupuncture system, where your neurolymphatic reflexes are along your spine and your key muscles along in–those tiny little muscles that spaz out–you have with pinched nerves. And you can actually help release yourself from all this nerve interference, acupuncture interference, and desensitize yourself from both allergies as well as toxins.

We all have an energy around our body. This energy, you can photograph it with Kirlian photography, you can see it around foods, you can see it around homeopathic formulas. And so, this energy, you can actually hold a product and get a reflex response from your body that will tell you, your body is a whole lot smarter than all of us will ever ascend to cortically in our own minds.

Our body is the key to our great successes and practice is when we can communicate with the body. The body is amazing. In scriptures it said it’s made in the image and likeness of God. The body is equipped with powers and insights, a wealth of wisdom, and a reservoir of knowledge within us that we can tap… that will take us light years beyond the limitations of lab tests. Isn’t that a good idea?

And so now we can begin to get direct confirmation from the body to tell us exactly what things do we need and what we don’t need.

The Forbidden Herb: Healing with Hemp and Cannabis

Depending on who you talk to, it’s either a dangerous weed rightfully blacklisted by the government as a societal vice – or it’s one of the most functionally versatile yet completely misunderstood plants ever to grace God’s green earth. I’m referring to the cannabis plant, the “forbidden herb” that’s rapidly earning itself a fresh reputation as nature’s healing alternative to everything from polluting fossil fuels to dangerous pharmaceuticals.

Perhaps you’ve heard a thing or two about cannabis in recent years. Perhaps you’ve wondered to yourself if this mysterious botanical specimen is really just a mind-altering “drug” that lazy people use to get high. Or if it just might be a panacea with the potential to “heal the nations,” as spoken of in ancient texts like the Holy Bible.

As we explore this taboo subject together, I encourage you to keep an open mind and consider all the facts surrounding one of the world’s most misconstrued plants. Based on what I’ve uncovered in my own studies, I’m now fully convinced that cannabis was placed on Earth by God for our collective good – and I’m very excited to share with you all that I’ve been learning about this amazing gift from nature.

Hemp vs. Marijuana: What’s the Difference?

I spent quite a bit of time researching the history of cannabis as part of my popular docu-series “The Truth About Cancer: A Global Quest.” One of the things I came to realize is that this sacred herb was highly treasured for both its practical and medicinal utility long before it was misrepresented and demonized by corrupt private interests and pandering governments.

Prior to the turn of the 20th Century, cannabis was viewed no more suspiciously than any other plant crop like tomatoes or corn. The American government actually encouraged farmers to grow cannabis. Its fibers are exceptionally strong and durable and convert quite nicely into rope, sails, paper, clothing, and various other textiles and materials.

Did you know hemp was considered so useful that in 1619 the Virginia Assembly passed legislation requiring all farmers to grow it for the betterment of the commonwealth? In fact, hemp was even allowed to be exchanged as legal tender in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland!

The type of industrial cannabis commonly grown by our nation’s forefathers is traditionally known as “hemp.” And unlike its polemically charged cousin “marijuana,” hemp can’t be smoked for psychological effects. Many people still don’t realize that there’s a difference between industrial hemp and marijuana, the latter being a slang term with its own sordid history that I’ll get into a little bit later.

But before I do, I think it’s important to point out that our forefathers grew both hemp and marijuana, according to the historical record. America’s first president, George Washington, wrote in his diary about how he separated his hemp plants during cultivation. This is exactly what growers today do to produce a particularly medicinal form of cannabis with higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (known as THC) – the primary psychoactive component in marijuana.

An excerpt from George Washington’s diary dated August 1765 reveals that this icon of historical Americana not only grew his own hemp cannabis for industrial use, but also psychoactive cannabis in the form of marijuana:

“Began to separate the Male from the Female hemp… rather too late,” Washington noted in his diary, adding that the male plants were visibly “coarser” and had “larger” stalks than the female plants.

Biologically speaking, both male and female hemp plants come from the same parent species, cannabis sativa. The difference lies in their respective functions. The utilitarian hemp plants are predominantly male, while the mind-affecting “marijuana” plants are all female.

This is an important distinction. It provides not only a historical context for why figures like George Washington separated the two, but also a practical understanding of how the plant is used today. When male cannabis plants come into contact with female cannabis plants, they fertilize the females and cause them to produce seeds. The males also prevent the females from producing the flowers used to produce psychoactive cannabis, which is why growers keep the two separate when producing potent cannabis to be used as medicine.

Was Cannabis Used by Our Founding Fathers?

The fact that George Washington separated his male and female cannabis plants suggests that he utilized cannabis in much the same way as today’s dispensaries do – and he wasn’t alone. Former President Andrew Jackson is said to have smoked cannabis, as did our Founding Father Thomas Jefferson. According to historians, Jefferson illegally smuggled cannabis seeds to America from Europe – although there is no evidence he ever used the ensuing crops for recreational purposes.

Other famous names linked to cannabis include Benjamin Franklin and John F. Kennedy, both of whom appear to have smoked and/or ingested psychoactive cannabis.

Many ancient cultures throughout other parts of the world – including those in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East – also embraced cannabis as a natural remedy for common health conditions such as inflammation, glaucoma, indigestion, headaches, insomnia, and all sorts of other ailments. And specifically in the United States, cannabis was regarded as science-based medicine up until about 1942, prior to which time it even held a prized spot in the well-respected United States Pharmacopeia (a compendium of drug information).

The Drive to Demonize Cannabis

All of this changed, however, when corrupt textile and pharmaceutical interests began poisoning the minds of the public with politically-charged, anti-cannabis rhetoric during the 1930s.

Since many of the Mexican immigrants who were arriving into the U.S. at that time had a penchant for cannabis use, corrupt individuals in government and private industry capitalized on sweeping racist sentiment. Officials spread lies about how cannabis supposedly provoked rape and other forms of violence.

This is how the name “marijuana,” an etymological derivative of “Maria-Juana,” first came to be – the word being a slang term for the “devil’s weed” that was supposedly used by amoral Mexicans and blacks to corrupt the white population… or so the narrative went.

This irrational fervor stoked the early fires of prohibition beginning in the 1910s, which eventually led to incremental changes in laws governing cannabis use all throughout the country. Massachusetts was the first state to officially ban cannabis cultivation and use. As the federal government grew ever larger, a national effort to ban cannabis quickly followed.

Harry J. Anslinger, who was appointed commissioner of the newly-created Federal Bureau of Narcotics in 1930, is credited as being “the architect of national prohibition.” His partner in crime, William Randolph Hearst, a lumber and paper industry baron (whose business interests were coincidentally being threatened by competition from the hemp industry), also played a critical role in vilifying and ultimately getting cannabis outlawed at the federal level.

“In 1937, the U.S. passed the first Federal law against cannabis, despite the objections of the American Medical Association (AMA),” explains Americans for Safe Access, an advocacy group currently working to undo the damage caused during this critical time in American history.

They go on to say that Dr. William C. Woodward, who was testifying on behalf of the AMA, told Congress that, “The American Medical Association knows of no evidence that marijuana is a dangerous drug” and warned that a prohibition “loses sight of the fact that future investigation may show that there are substantial medical uses for Cannabis.”

But none of this mattered in the end, as Anslinger, Hearst, and the rest of the anti-cannabis crusaders achieved their goal. Cannabis ended up being classified by the government as a Schedule I drug with no recognized medical use, landing it right alongside dangerous street drugs like cocaine and heroin in terms of its potential for abuse and harm.

Truth be told, this classification couldn’t be more inaccurate. And yet, looking at cannabis through any other lens than negative is still a difficult feat for many people who’ve bought into the “Reefer Madness” lie that cannabis is dangerous, useless, and has no place in society. The good news, though, is that the political winds are finally starting to shift and cannabis is once again making its way back into mainstream society.

Healing Properties of Hemp Oil and Seeds

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of all that cannabis has to offer as far as health benefits (from here on out when I speak of “cannabis,” I’m referring to the THC-containing kind that people smoke), I want to delve into the health benefits of non-psychoactive industrial hemp. This plant is used to make food products like hemp seeds and hemp seed oil that are legally sold nationwide.

Not to be confused with cannabidiol (CBD) oil derived from cannabis, which I’ll discuss later on, hemp seed oil and the seeds from which they’re derived are widely available at most grocery and health food stores. They’re considered food products because they contain only trace amounts of THC. Many people consume them in smoothies, on salads, or as dietary supplements.

Though it still can’t be legally grown in most places in the U.S. due to antiquated, prohibition-era laws that erroneously lumped it into the same category as psychoactive cannabis, hemp can be legally purchased and consumed throughout the U.S. and much of the rest of the world. Most hemp products sold in the U.S. today are imported from Canada, as Canada’s cultivation laws do differentiate between industrial hemp and psychoactive cannabis.

Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are among the richest plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids – including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – which has been shown to protect the heart, brain, and cardiovascular systems. Hemp seed oil is also a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory food product that aids in boosting immune function.

Hemp Oil Soothes the Skin & Improves Blood Flow

People with skin problems may also benefit from consuming hemp oil. One study published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment found that individuals with atopic dermatitis showed significant changes in their plasma fatty acid profiles and experienced improved clinical symptoms as a result of consuming hemp oil.

Hemp seeds are an excellent source of both fat and protein – roughly 25% of each seed is made up of “complete” protein, while another 30% is made up of high-quality fat. Plus there’s all the vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, and sulfur contained in hemp seeds.

Healthy blood flow is a crucial part of human health, and hemp seeds serve an important role in this area as well. Rich in arginine (an amino acid that promotes vasodilation), hemp seeds fuel the body’s production of nitric oxide, which helps relax and expand blood vessels to reduce blood pressure and increase blood flow. In fact, hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids, which is why they’re considered to be a complete protein. Hypothetically speaking, one could consume nothing but hemp seeds and still maintain pristine health due to the full-spectrum nutrients packed into every kernel.

Shelled hemp seeds are also an excellent source of fiber, both soluble and insoluble, which means smoother sailing for your digestive tract. With colon cancer rates on the rise, adding more hemp seeds to your diet is a great way to help prevent fecal buildup and keep your intestines in tip-top shape.

As I mentioned earlier, industrial hemp is legal in all 50 states, so you’re free to purchase it locally or order it online. There’s also an array of health benefits to be derived from full-spectrum, female-plant cannabis, which is still outlawed federally. Because it’s been demonized for so long, psychoactive THC (which is abundant in cannabis), remains a bogeyman in many people’s minds. But this key compound holds its own special place in natural healing that you simply can’t get from non-psychoactive industrial hemp.

A little background may be relevant here. Cannabinoids are a class of chemical compounds that act on the so-called “cannabinoid receptor proteins” in our body and brain. These receptor proteins can bind to and get activated by the “endocannabinoids.”

Endocannabinoids come from three sources:

  1. They are produced naturally in the brain and nervous system (interestingly, they are also found in breast milk)
  2. From phytocannabinoids, including THC, which are found in cannabis and some other plants
  3. Synthetic cannabinoids that are manufactured artificially.

Like the many other cannabinoids found in cannabis, THC binds to cannabinoid receptors throughout the body – particularly in the brain – where it helps alleviate pain. THC feeds the body’s innate endocannabinoid system while either stimulating or sedating the brain and body. Cannabis strains of the sativa variety are typically associated with brain “highs,” while indica cannabis is most often associated with body relaxation.

There are also quite a few variations within these two categories, including sativa-indica hybrid strains that exert both body and brain effects. There are literally hundreds of different cannabis strains offering a wide variety of health benefits, and with suitability for both daytime and nighttime use so patients can focus, sleep, or do whatever it is they need to do at a particular moment in time.

Cannabis in general is packed with an array of special healing phytocannabinoids, of which there are over 85 different types depending on the strain. Each phytocannabinoid offers its own unique therapeutic benefit, with the two most well-known being THC and CBD. But there are also many others like CBC, CBG, and CBN – as well as the “acid” forms of both THC and CBD, known as THCa and CBDa, respectively, which are found in raw cannabis leaves and buds.

“When cannabis is consumed, cannabinoids bind to receptor sites throughout our brain (receptors called CB-1) and body (CB-2),” explains the cannabis information resource Leafly. “Different cannabinoids have different effects depending on which receptors they bind to. For example, THC binds to receptors in the brain whereas CBN (cannabinol) has a strong affinity for CB-2 receptors located throughout the body. By aiming the right cannabinoid at the right receptors, different types of relief are achievable.”

In fact, Leafly has created a “Cannabis Wheel” infographic that offers a visual depiction of the various cannabinoids found in cannabis – and what each one does in the areas of chronic pain, sleep, gastrointestinal health, mood, behavior, and neurological balance.

What is CBD?

CBD is another cannabinoid that, unlike THC, produces no psychoactive effects. This is because CBD binds to cannabinoid receptors throughout the body, rather than only in the brain. This means CBD is able to effectively alleviate symptoms like nausea and vomiting, seizure activity, inflammation, neurodegenerative disorders, anxiety, depression, and psychosis, while also combating tumor and cancer cells.

CBD is just one of over 60 active cannabinoid compounds that feed the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is made up of endogenous (originating within the body) cannabinoid receptors designed specifically for the cannabinoids found in cannabis. These receptors are found throughout the human brain, as well as in the central and peripheral nervous systems – and each receptor site is specifically suited for a certain type of cannabinoid.

Cannabis also contains aromatic oil compounds known as terpenes that, like cannabinoids, bind to cannabinoid receptors throughout the body and brain. Terpenes are the pungent oils secreted by cannabis trichomes, those crystal-like “hairs” that give cannabis buds their snow-covered gleam.

Terpenes are what furnish each cannabis strain with its own unique scent and flavor profile, and are similar in nature to those found in common plant-based essential oils that you might use in a diffuser to make your home smell pleasant. There are more than 100 different terpenes that have thus far been identified in cannabis, generating all sorts of pungent flavors and smells ranging from pine and citrus to berry and mint.

Terpenes interact synergistically with cannabinoids to produce what is called an “entourage effect,” enhancing the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids. Terpenes bind to the same receptor sites throughout the body and brain that cannabinoids do, regulating and altering their respective chemical outputs. Terpenes also help modulate how much THC passes through the blood-brain barrier, along with helping to mitigate brain neurotransmitter production, including both dopamine and serotonin.

Cannabis strains rich in the terpene beta-myrcene, for instance, tend to have a musky, earthy aroma and are commonly used to help induce sleep. Strains containing limonene tend to have a distinct citrus aroma, with this particular terpene helping to elevate mood and relieve stress. Other common terpenes found in cannabis include linalool, beta-caryophyllene, alpha-pinene, and humulene.

Don’t Be Misled: Full-Spectrum CBD Oil Comes from Cannabis, Not Hemp

Perhaps you’ve heard the story of young Charlotte Figi, the Colorado girl whose nightmarish epileptic condition was effectively cured with a CBD-rich strain of cannabis known as “Charlotte’s Web.” Ever since her amazing story went public, people across the country have been seeking out CBD oil for their own conditions which – because of inconsistent, patchwork cannabis laws – has created a market for hemp-derived CBD oils that are legal in all 50 states.

While hemp does contain some CBD, CBD oils derived from hemp are not the same as CBD oils derived from full-spectrum cannabis, as the two plants have variant cannabinoid profiles. True CBD oil derived from full-spectrum cannabis (which is not yet legal in all 50 states), is much more potent and healing than the hemp-derived kind. Hence the dire need for major cannabis reform both at the state and federal levels.

If you currently live in a state or country where cannabis is still illegal, either medically or recreationally, you may wish to contact your legislators and urge them to introduce or support reform initiatives to end cannabis prohibition.

Building the Biblical Case for Cannabis

As a Christian myself, I recognize that some readers may be wondering whether or not cannabis use is congruent with their religious convictions. I’m excited to tell you that from a Biblical perspective I’m fully convinced that cannabis is safe, beneficial, and good for humanity. Here are a few Biblical passages that help make the case…

In Genesis 1:29, God offered up an edict to Adam in the Garden of Eden, declaring, “I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” Cannabis is a seed-bearing plant that freely grows like a weed, so it falls into the category of plants given to mankind by God.

In Hebrew and Aramaic translations of the bible (Exodus 30:22-24), God instructs Moses about how to produce the holy anointing oil, one of the ingredients of which is “Q’aneh-Bosm” (also translated as “Kaneh-Bosem”) which many Biblical scholars believe refers to cannabis. Phonetically speaking, this would appear to be accurate.

The Book of Revelation also speaks of a “tree of life” that “yield[s] her fruit every month” and whose leaves “were for the healing of the nations.” There’s been much debate over the identity of this mystical tree, with compelling arguments to suggest that this verse might just be talking about cannabis.

On the flip side, just a few chapters earlier in Revelation 18:23, the book’s writer, John, speaks of all nations being deceived by the “sorceries” of Babylon. The Greek word for sorceries, in this context, is pharmakeia, the root word from which we’ve derived the words pharmacy and pharmaceuticals. Now there’s some food for thought!

Considering the diversity of health benefits to be gained from cannabis – and the fact that it’s a seed-bearing plant blessed by God and the Biblical proof texts that suggest cannabis was one of the ingredients God mandated for use in the holy anointing oil, I’m fully convinced that cannabis is a true gift from God.

I hope you feel the same way, or at the very least now recognize that there’s so much more to this sacred plant than you’ve likely been told.

The immune system plays a pivotal role in cancer prevention. The immune system recognizes and destroys most abnormal cells (some of which can result in cancer). Fermented foods are a cost-effective way to boost the immune system.

3. Probiotics Aid With Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease

Metabolic syndrome has been linked to several types of cancer. While it may not necessarily cause cancer, it is linked to poorer cancer outcomes including increased risk of recurrence and overall mortality. Fermented foods are great sources of essential nutrients that help prevent heart disease and metabolic syndrome, including vitamin K2.

Several studies have found a positive correlation between increased intake of fermented foods and improved management of metabolic syndrome along with a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease. In one study, it was found that high intake of fermented milk may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Another study associated yogurt with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

In a 2010 study, fermented whey protein was found to have beneficial effects on lipid metabolism, blood glucose control, and hypertension. These beneficial effects contribute to the management of metabolic syndrome and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

4. Anti-Cancer Potential of Probiotics

Fermented foods have been linked to the death of colon cancer cells (apoptosis). In a study first published in May 2017, fermented soybean extract showed anticancer potential.

Researchers fermented soybean seed powder with Lactobacillus plantarum DGK-17, which was previously isolated from kimchi. The fermented extract resulted in morphological changes, reduction of cancer cell colony formation, and apoptotic cell death of colon cancer cells.

Another study published in 2017 affirmed that fermented foods improve the health and well-being of cancer survivors. In this study, cancer survivors found kefir (a fermented milk product) to be acceptable for consumption. The study stated that kefir has the potential to improve recovery from exercise and the health of cancer survivors.

5. Probiotics Support Reduced Inflammation Throughout the Body

Chronic low-grade inflammation is one of the leading causes of disease, premature aging, and illness. A healthy diet is essential to reducing inflammation. Fermented foods are key to fighting inflammation because they build immunity and help control infections that may underlie inflammation.

It has also been found that an intestinal “inflammatory microbiome” exists which may be facilitated by the standard American diet of high-sugar, low nutrient-value foods. Beneficial microbes can offset the consequences of an inflammatory microbiome. Fermented foods are an excellent source of these beneficial microbes.

4 Types of Fermented Foods

Different cultures around the world have their own unique fermented foods. It is ideal to consume a variety of fermented foods to inoculate the gut with different probiotics.

Four key types of fermented foods include:

1. Fermented Vegetables

Fermented veggies contain antioxidants, live enzymes, and lactobacillus that improve gut health.

Raw cabbage has probiotics and enzymes that are exponentially multiplied during the fermentation period. Fresh (not canned) sauerkraut is a fantastic source of living enzymes and active lactobacillus and pediococcus strains of probiotics.

The most popular of Korean foods, kimchi, is most commonly made by fermenting cabbages. There are many other variations of kimchi using cucumbers, eggplants, leeks, radishes, and other seasonal veggies.

Often times these are prepared with a combination of fermented veggies that give them antioxidants, live enzymes, and the special organism lactobacillus, among others.

2. Fermented Soy

Fermented soy comes in three major forms: natto, tempeh, and miso. Miso and tempeh often incorporate brown rice and barley fermentation with two unique probiotic yeast species.  These yeasts enhance the bioavailability of the amino acids and produce high amounts of B vitamins. The bacillus subtilis bacterium is used to produce natto which is rich in proteolytic enzymes and vitamin K2.

Natto, which originated in Japan, is made from fermented soybeans. Tempeh, a soy product originally from Indonesia, is frequently used as a meat substitute. Miso, native to China and Japan, is a paste that can be used in soups and dressings.

3. Fermented Dairy

Fermented dairy products (also known as cultured dairy foods) contain diverse microbiota that have a positive impact on health. Dairy products such as yogurt, kefir, lassi, and amasi are fermented with lactic acid-based bacteria.

Kefir is a tart, yogurt-like drink that is traditionally make by fermenting dairy milk. Other milk varieties can also be used such as coconut milk and nut milks. Lassi is a yogurt-based drink made salty or sweet. Salted lassi is flavored with spices. Sweet lassi contains sugar or fruits instead of spices. Amasi is fermented milk that is very popular in South Africa.

Fermented dairy products share many of the same bacterial strains including lactobacillus and saccharomyces. They also contain one of the most potent probiotic strains, Bacillus coagulans. This combination of probiotic organisms works in synergy to repair and protect the gut, and to destroy even the harshest opportunistic organisms.

4. Other Fermented Products

Kombucha is known to support healthy gut bacteria and digestion.

There are many other fermented foods and beverages. For example, kombucha is a drink made from sweetened tea fermented with a culture of bacteria and yeast called a “mother.” Some cheeses are fermented as part of their production. There are also fermented breads, such as sourdough bread.

Contraindications With Fermented Foods

As a clinician, I have learned that when individuals react very poorly to fermented foods it is usually a sign of histamine intolerance. Histamine is a compound that is released from immune cells and some gut bacteria. Individuals with histamine intolerance have symptoms such as runny nose, headaches, asthma, and itchy skin.

Fermented foods contain high amounts of histamine. Some people cannot handle any high histamine foods while others can handle certain types and not others. As an example, an individual may tolerate avocados, berries, and lemons (which contain some histamine) quite well but have significant reactions with any sort of fermented foods or wine.

You as an individual will have to determine whether fermented foods trigger a histamine reaction in you. If so, you may be able to welcome fermented foods back into your life after healing the gut, reducing inflammation, improving liver function, and stabilizing the adrenals.

Charlene: When it comes to foods we eat everyday, the United States is arguably at the bottom of the pile in terms of food quality and safety. It has been estimated that 70-95% of Americans are deficient in magnesium. And those with nutritional deficiencies are more likely to get cancer.

Ty: That’s an amazing statistic if you really think about it. Keep watching and learn from our good friends KC & Monica Craichy as they discuss Nutrition 101 and share powerful techniques about how to use superfoods and supplementation strategically – try saying that five times fast – to fight disease and boost healing. KC: So, foods that heal, we had a whole list, Monica you had them take pictures of those lists. And all the lists we talk about: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, anti-glycation. Those are primary foods that you’re going to want to take. And you see strategic supplementation. Again, we have to take foods that are in supplements that we require to take.

I mean, folks, everyone in here requires essential vitamins. Everyone in here requires essential minerals, trace minerals, antioxidants, polyphenols. You require these things. They don’t call them essential because they are, like, optional. But folks mostly are not getting them. You might think “Hey, I might go eat all the vegetables I can get and somehow that’s going to make me healthy.”

Monica: So, you’re saying that we really can’t get all of these essential things by our food?

KC: You can’t. If you ever look at a topographical map of the mineral deposits in the United States of America, and you look at the farmland country, you can go to the Northwest, not quite all the way West, and you can find high selenium. But if you go to the Southeast, or the Southwest, or the Northeast and you buy your vegetables, your selenium content is going to be nil.

Selenium is one of the things that most people here are deficient in, magnesium they’re deficient in. Farming grows a crop, pulls out all the minerals and puts three back, grows a crop, takes all the minerals, puts three back. Folks, you cannot get your minerals from food. You can’t get your vitamins from food. You can’t get all your things from food.

So this is what we – I discovered in the year 2000, Monica, this superfood nutrition we call it. This is what the talk is about, right? Superfood nutrition for cancer prevention. It’s not just prevention, it also is treatment. We give a protocol out for our people that call us, “Hey I just got diagnosed, they think it’s cancer. What do I do?”

And so, when they contact us, and please feel free to contact and we’ll send them a protocol and say, “Here’s what we would suggest and you show your doctor and hopefully it will be a doctor that understands the body and he’ll say, “Yeah that’s a good idea.” And so, the point we say is that you do this protocol until you decide on treatment protocol, hopefully it will continue the same protocol. Okay so we’re not trying to tell you what to do, we’re trying to tell you information for you to make good decisions.

So, what is superfood nutrition? Everyone kind of thinks “Oh, superfood nutrition for cancer prevention.” But what is superfood nutrition? What I discovered so many years ago, around the turn of 2000, was that if you—we need these superfoods. The list of superfoods is dramatic. But we also need higher protein levels.

And there are a lot of people that say different than that, but I will tell you the research suggests that people with higher protein levels score better in every clinical measurable way. So, these people telling you that you don’t need protein, just need a little protein, it can be true if you’re on a ketogenic diet, because you only have so much protein and still maintain ketosis, but you want to get as high as you can get and still maintain ketosis.

People who have surgery recover more quickly if they have protein before and protein after. People who work out recover quickly, and the athletic community will tell you all day long, what’s the number one most important nutrient? They’ll say protein.

Well, truthfully, tell me, what is the body’s requirement for daily for protein? How many grams a day? Anybody know? What percentage? Okay. I’ve heard from zero to a lot. The point I’m trying to make here is a varied confusion here because a lot of people are talking a lot of things. But I’m going to shock you a little bit. The body’s requirement for protein is zero. The body requires what’s in protein. The body doesn’t require protein.

Monica: Amino Acids

KC: The body requires essential amino acids of which there are 9, 10, 11 or 12, depending who you’re talking to and dependent on whether they’re essential or conditionally essential. So, if you took enough essential amino acids, you wouldn’t have to take protein, because what you take protein for is nitrogen and amino acids, essential amino acids. The body would preferentially grab the essential amino acids and then the nonessentials come next.

So, you’ve got to raise the protein.

Now the next piece, if you’re a vegetarian, most vegetarians that I end up in contact with and I suggest a change, I say increase your plant, take some LivingFuel or increase your plant-based protein and not just plant-based protein. You’ve got to optimize. What we do when we make up plant-based protein is we mix a couple of proteins together and then we do the protein profile and then we look at what the amino acids look like and we’ll add essential amino acids to make the profile look like it came from an egg. But it’s all plant.

So, protein as essential amino acids are really essential. But when you have lower-calorie intake, so if you’re vegetarian you already know you dropped your calories a lot, the lower the calories the more requirement of protein. So, if you had a certain amount of protein a day and you dropped your calories, you’ve got to increase your protein to get the same amount of protein. That is just a fact, it’s talked about in athletics but not too much in medicine. It’s really important.

So, here’s the point. You have all these powerful foods. We need to have the protein, we need to have optimized levels of well-known nutrients.

So, when we put together superfoods, broccoli, spinach, kale, spirulina, barley grass, and you put together blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, garlic, all the things that were on the list and you increase the protein levels to optimal levels and you add in the essential vitamins and minerals and trace minerals and antioxidants, and polyphenols, and you add things that we scientifically know that if you have this much of this, in this form, you’ll be actually ideal.

But if you just took the vitamins without the superfoods, it wouldn’t be ideal because you don’t even know what you’re missing. So superfood nutrition is the combination of well-known superfoods with well-known essential nutrients and critical nutrients at optimal levels, and when you put them together it’s life changing.

12 Nutrients that Target & Destroy Cancer Stem…

Lack of adequate nutrition can lead to cancer growth – on the other hand, the right nutrients can inhibit cancerous cells from multiplying.

Scientists have known for decades that cancer cells have the ability to repair themselves, multiply, differentiate, and escape normal cellular processes such as apoptosis or “cell suicide.” Only recently researchers have learned that cancer cells originate from stem cells. Stem cells are unspecialized cells in our body that can, given the right “signal,” be transformed into any “specialized” cell.

Stem cells found in adults are known as adult stem cells, which normally act as a repair system for the body, constantly replenishing our body’s tissues.

Researchers are also beginning to understand that our diet is perhaps the greatest tool in preventing and treating cancer. Specifically, regular consumption of freshly available, non-irradiated fruits and vegetables is associated with lowered risk of many chronic diseases, including cancer.

Cancer Cells Originate from Stem Cells

What is known as a pro-survival technique enables cancer cells to develop into the invasive and relentless disease that can wreak havoc on any tissue in our bodies. Unlike typical stem cells, cancer stem cells are self-sufficient, resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs and treatments, have the ability to self-renew, increase inflammation, and are not influenced by contact with other stem cells or anti-growth signals.

Cancer stem cells are also sustained by angiogenesis (the physiological process by which new blood vessels are formed, which cancer tumors use to feed themselves nutrients and grow), flawed cellular energy mechanisms, and their ability to evade normal cellular functions such as apoptosis or cell suicide.

Phytochemicals that Fight Cancer

Nutrient-rich plant foods typically contain phytochemicals, which have anti-cancer properties. Phytochemicals are chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants. Some are responsible for color such as the deep purple of blueberries, while others are responsible for smell. For example, the pungent fragrance of freshly squeezed garlic.

Phytochemicals can have specific actions on our body when we consume the plants containing them. It is estimated that there may be as many as 4,000 different phytochemicals in the plant world. Some of these phytochemicals not only target and kill cancer stem cells, but they also reverse the mechanical flaws in our body which cancer cells thrive on.

12 Nutrients to Consume Daily

Consume the following 12 nutrients daily to equip your body with the cancer-fighting tools it requires to prevent and treat cancerous growth.

#1 – Ursolic Acid

A dietary compound found in herbal medicines such as holy basil, as well as in the natural waxy coating of fruits like apples, ursolic acid has extraordinary anti-cancer potential. Ursolic acid has been shown to treat cancers of the skin, colon, breast, lung, cervix, prostate, esophagus, and pancreas.

Specifically, ursolic acid reduced tumor size and distant organ metastasis of colorectal cancer cells, likely by blocking the expression of proteins needed for their survival, proliferation, and metastasis.

Researchers are aware of ursolic acid’s ability to reduce inflammation-promoting enzymes despite not having a full understanding of all biological functions which ursolic acid affects. Reducing the levels of these enzymes is critical to blocking abnormal cell cycles and preventing the expression of genes which turn off cellular apoptosis. In other words, ursolic acid increases cancer cell apoptosis and prevents DNA replication, a typical characteristic of cancerous growth that would otherwise lead to metastasis.

Increasing the ursolic acid content of your daily nutrient intake can inhibit tumors from forming in your body. Many health practitioners supplement with a dose of 150-300 mg ursolic acid 3 times daily for optimal benefits. This is much more than you could get from using apple peels and holy basil which have between 5-10 mg of ursolic acid per serving. Waxy apple peels and holy basil do have other phytonutrients that are beneficial for the body’s immune system, however, and shouldn’t be discarded.

#2 – Piperine

Every year colorectal cancer kills more than 639,000 individuals worldwide. One of the major causes likely to blame for such a high statistic is a bacterium known as H. pylori, which invades the gastrointestinal lining of more than half of the world’s population and is carcinogenic. Known as the “King of Spices,” piperine – a compound found in black pepper – helps reduce the incidence of cancers relating to the stomach and breast. Piperine has traditionally been used to treat symptoms of cold and fever. Most recently it has gained attention for its cancer fighting properties.

Direct research suggests that piperine has anti-inflammatory effects on H. pylori-induced gastritis and may potentially be useful in prevention of H. pylori-associated gastric carcinogenesis. Piperine appears to prevent H. pylori growth by preventing it from adhering to the gastrointestinal surface.

Piperine has also been shown to target cancer stem cells of breast tumors in testing. As a result of piperine’s actions, the H. pylori bacterium cannot release toxins, cause stress, raise inflammation levels, and promote cancer growth. The antimutagenic factors which piperine induces may be due to its ability to prevent proteins from binding which would normally stimulate cancer formation. Add piperine to your daily diet by including freshly ground high quality black pepper in marinades, salad dressings, sauces, dips, and soups.

#3 – Lycopene

Lycopene is a bioactive compound that destroys cancer cell activity. Foods rich in lycopene include red-fleshed colored fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, watermelons, pink grapefruit, and even so-called “blood” oranges. In fact, red-fleshed sweet orange juice that contains high levels of beta-carotene and lycopene has been shown to have potential chemopreventive effects on leukemia cells in laboratory experiments.

Consuming a lycopene-rich diet is as easy as snacking on watermelon on hot summer days, or adding a bowl of grapefruit to your yogurt in the winter. Add pulp back into your beverage when juicing citrus foods containing lycopene. Increase the bioavailability of lycopene in foods by simmering tomato skins before consumption and enjoy homemade pasta sauce and salsa.

Lycopene’s anti-cancer properties stem from its ability to increase cytotoxicity and apoptosis in cancer cells. This nutrient disrupts cancer stem cells’ communication signals which help a cancer cell to flourish – and instead increases its risk of dying. Cancers which lycopene may be effective at preventing include cervix, colon, lung, and prostate cancer.

If you are looking to avoid carbohydrates and stay on a ketogenic diet, you may want to consider supplementing with 30-50 mg of lycopene, 1-2 times daily. This is about the same amount you would get from eating 2 servings of organic tomato sauce.

#4 – Isothiocyanates

Isothiocyanates are derived from naturally occurring sulfur-containing compounds called glucosinolates. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, wasabi, horseradish, mustard, radish, and watercress contain many types of glucosinolates, each of which forms a different isothiocyanate when hydrolyzed in our body.

Isothiocyanates such as sulforaphane may help to prevent cancer by eliminating potential carcinogens and by enhancing production of so-called “tumor suppressor proteins.” In other words, consuming isothiocyanates through cruciferous vegetable consumption may decrease cancer risk – although boiling and microwaving cruciferous vegetables is known to reduce the bioavailability of isothiocyanates. Depending on the particular vegetable, either consume raw (eg. broccoli sprouts and watercress) or lightly steam (eg. Brussels sprouts, kale, and cauliflower) to retain the most nutrients.

Isothiocyanates promote detoxification, enhance immunity, activate cancer inhibiting agents, and prevent against tumor growth related to the breast, stomach, spleen, prostate, and colon. Isothiocyanates inhibit cancer in many ways. They:

  • Prevent toxins from accumulating
  • Prevent inflammation
  • Stimulate antioxidant potential
  • Increase healthy gut microflora and remove carcinogenic bacteria linked to stomach cancer
  • Promote phase 2 enzymes which stimulate antioxidant powerhouses such as glutathione
  • Increase Nrf2 signaling pathways known to block tumor formation

You too can benefit from the many health benefits of isothiocyanates by adding them to your diet. Although cruciferous vegetables are excellent sources of these powerful compounds, it turns out their sprouts are far more powerful cancer fighting foods. For instance, did you know that cruciferous sprouts can contain up to 100 times more of the glucosinolate compounds needed for the body to produce isothiocyanates than an entire head of broccoli can provide?!

If choosing to supplement with sulforophane, many health practitioners advise taking 300-600 mg, 1-2 times daily. This is especially useful for complementing treatment against hormone-sensitive cancers, as isothiocyanates are very good estrogen detoxifiers.

#5 – Curcumin

Turmeric is a member of the ginger family that has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine

Turmeric is a herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family. The rhizomes of this plant are boiled, dried, and ground into a deep-orange-yellow powder that is used as a spice in Indian cuisine, for dyeing, and to impart color to mustard condiments. One active ingredient of this turmeric powder is curcumin.

Curcumin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. Curcumin prevents chronic inflammation and can also decrease risk of cancer development. Curcumin regulates various factors and substances involved with cancer stem cells and manipulates multiple signaling pathways that are necessary for cancer formation.

Curcumin has shown to target cancer cells by turning off factors which normally would suppress apoptosis, preventing angiogenesis which supplies nutrients and blood flow to cancer cells, and inhibiting tumor invasion and metastasis.

The following types of cancers have been shown to be suppressed by curcumin:

  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Kidney
  • Renal
  • Bladder
  • Brain
  • Ovarian
  • Liver
  • Lung
  • Colorectal
  • Cervical
  • Breast
  • Prostate

Many health practitioners recommend taking 500-1000 mg doses, 3-4 times daily with food. Curcumin should also be mixed with piperine from black pepper and taken with a fat-based meal for optimal absorption.

#6 – EGCG

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate, also referred to as EGCG, is a polyphenol found in green tea. EGCG is linked to numerous health benefits including its ability to treat cancer.

Did you know that sipping on green tea regularly can reduce your risk of breast, colon, prostate, and lung cancer? You could also make a green tea base instead of water to add to your smoothies.

EGCG prevents cancer cells from multiplying, causing inflammation, and invading new tissue – and it also interrupts cancer stem cells communication pathways. Researchers have found that EGCG inhibits critical proteins required for cancer cell survival from binding and shuts off mechanisms which induce cancerous cell growth.

Matcha green tea is the most potent form of EGCG. One glass of Matcha is equivalent to 10 glasses of a commercial green tea in terms of its nutritional value and antioxidant content. One could also supplement with 400-800 mg of EGCG, 1-2 times daily. Always use this earlier in the day as it can be stimulating.

One caveat is that green tea does reduce folate absorption. If using green tea daily, it is advisable to consume extra raw green vegetables (that are rich in folate) in salads or juices or to supplement with an extra 500 mg of methylfolate or calcium folinate.

#7 – Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)

Did you know that approximately 10,000 cancer cells are produced daily in your body and have the ability to invade, multiply, and spread to other areas? Vitamin D3 deficiency is one of the most common factors associated with the pathogenesis development) of cancer. Unfortunately, our lack of time spent outdoors in natural sunlight and the increase in use of synthetic drugs has lowered our body’s ability to absorb nutrients from the sun and vitamin D sources from food. Needless to say, proper intake of vitamin D3 daily is required for the prevention of cancer.

Vitamin D3 has been shown in doses of 20,000 IU to act as an effective therapy in delaying the onset of cancer and alleviating systemic inflammation. Perhaps most vital for D3 daily intake is the production of GcMAF, a protein which inhibits cancer cells and boosts the immune system’s natural response to invasive agents such as cancer. GcMAF can eradicate tumors completely but requires adequate vitamin D3 levels for its activity.

Ideal levels for vitamin D3 (25-hydoxy vitamin D) are between 60-100 ng/ml with the ideal range between 80-100 ng/ml for individuals looking to prevent or slow cancer growth. As a general rule, take 1,000 IUs per 25 pounds (11.3 kg) of body weight to slowly raise your vitamin D levels into range or take 2,000 IUs per 25 pounds of body weight to quickly raise your vitamin D levels.

Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient, it is important to take the supplement with a fat-based meal for optimal absorption.

#8 – Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a natural phenol produced naturally by several plants in response to injury or when under attack by bacteria or fungi. Food sources of resveratrol include the skins of grapes (as well as wine made from grape skins), blueberries, raspberries, and mulberries.

This phenolic compound has a profound ability to prevent and heal metabolic conditions such as cancer. Quercetin is a dietary antioxidant found in fruits, vegetables, teas, and wine. Quercetin has been shown to specifically interfere with cancer stem cells by blocking communication to processes which stimulate free radical production. As a result, hazardous and cancer-stimulating free radicals such as reactive oxygen species are drastically reduced.

Quercetin exhibits anti-cancer properties which improve the production of other antioxidant levels such as glutathione and SOD, thereby further preventing free radical damage and cancer growth. High doses of quercetin may be used to impair the expression of cancer stem cell-activating genes linked to leukemia. Quercetin can relieve inflammation and acts as an antihistamine due to its impact on lowering immune cell responses.

Consuming organic apples (including the skin), red onions, green tea, raspberries, and dark colored tomatoes are great ways to increase quercetin in your diet and lower your risk of cancer. If choosing to supplement with quercetin, it is recommended to take 400-500 mg, 2-3 times per day.

Over 600 types of anthocyanins are found naturally in plants such as berries (especially bilberries), grapes, red cabbage, red onions, eggplant, tea, and specific varieties of oranges. Anthocyanins increase the function of genes which act to inhibit tumor growth pathways in cancer stem cells. Anthocyanins are also equipped to trigger apoptosis by manipulating cell signaling between cancer stem cells and tumors.

Anthocyanins enable the body to naturally heal – making them potentially useful in treating colorectal cancer, reducing breast cancer tumors, and limiting leukemia cells from spreading. These dietary components have the ability to control cancer stem cells which otherwise are uncontrollable. Anthocyanins enhance the productivity of genes which suppress tumors, induce apoptosis in colon cancer cells, and create dysfunction in leukemia cells.

Consuming nutrient-dense, anthocyanin-rich foods can help to protect your body from developing cancer and fight already present tumors. Having a handful of organic blueberries or blackberries each day is a fantastic way to get more of these nutrients into your system.

One of the best ways to get anthocyanins is to make fermented sauerkraut with red cabbage and red onions. The final product is rich in isothiocyanates, anthocyanins, and other sulfur compounds that boost glutathione and cancer stem cell-killing compounds.

Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe is now available in over 250 territories worldwide

America’s most controversial documentary, Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe, is now available in over 250 territories worldwide via iTunes and the streaming platform Vimeo, where it is available in English, Spanish, and Italian. (Check out the trailer below.)

If you haven’t yet seen the film, I highly recommend it. I’ve been a huge supporter of the movement since day one and even stopped by the bus with Dr. Mercola for an interview (see below). Again, I can’t suggest enough that you see this film.

“Vaxxed investigates the charges made by a whistleblower at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the leading national public health institute of the United States, who revealed that the agency manipulated data on an important study showing a causal link between the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism.

The film is produced by British filmmaker Polly Tommey of the Autism Media Channel and Del Bigtree, an American and former producer of the hit television show “The Doctors.” The film is directed by Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a British academic gastroenterologist who has published over 140 peer-reviewed scientific publications and spoken internationally on autism and vaccines. Dr. Wakefield and Dr. John Walker-Smith, one of the world’s leading pediatric gastroenterologists, were the first to discover that vaccines caused gut problems that could lead to autism (1998). They, along with 11 other authors, published their findings in The Lancet, a British medical journal, in February 1998.

The British General Medical Council (GMC), acting to protect the government from coming under fire for the potential damage caused by vaccines, decided that Dr. Wakefield and his co-author had acted unethically, and they lost their medical licenses. Both Dr. Wakefield and Professor Walker-Smith appealed the GMC ruling in the English High Court. Professor Walker-Smith’s professional insurance paid for his appeal. Dr. Wakefield’s insurance carrier would not, therefore Dr. Wakefield was not able to continue his appeal. After reviewing the original findings, Justice Mitting found that the GMC’s conclusions were “based on inadequate and superficial reasoning” and that “the finding of serious professional misconduct and the sanction of erasure are both quashed.” Dr. Walker-Smith’s license was completely reinstated, and all charges against him were dismissed.

Ninety percent of the charges against Walker-Smith were the same charges as those against Dr. Wakefield, so had he been able to appeal, the verdict would have applied to Dr. Wakefield also. The Lancet paper should have been reinstated, and yet The Lancet editor refused to. Justice Mitting’s judicial decision marked a long-awaited turning point in a decades long campaign to discredit the 1998 Lancet article and Dr. Wakefield in particular.

The documentary captured international headlines when it was pulled from the already-announced line-up of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival due to pressure from sponsors on the festival organizers. Immediately following the de-selection, Cinema Libre Studio launched a nationwide theatrical release with an unprecedented 4 days of preparation, premiering April 1st at the prestigious Angelika Film Center in NYC, where it achieved the highest single screen box office gross for a documentary that year. Robert De Niro, a festival co-founder, went on national network television (NBC’s “Today Show”) and renounced the “de-selection” of the film saying, “I think the movie is something that people should see. There was definitely something to that movie…” He went on to say, “There’s a lot of information about things that are happening with the CDC, the pharmaceutical companies. As a parent of a child who has autism, I’m concerned. And I want to know the truth.”

Despite numerous attempts to incorrectly label the film as “anti-vaccine” and overt censorship from festivals and media outlets, the film was released theatrically in over 60 U.S and Canadian cities, with an additional 500 screening events, grossing over $1.2 million at the box office and sold tens of thousands of DVDs and digital streams.

According to, Vaxxed is the 22nd highest grossing political documentary and has been seen by more than a half a million people in theaters in the U.S. The filmmakers have been touring the nation by bus, the Vaxxed tour, and have recorded nearly ten thousand vaccine injury stories.”

America’s Vaccine Civil War: Baylor doctor attacks mothers of vaccine damaged children in attempt to silence them

In 2017, in Scientific American magazine, Dr. Hotez called on the U.S. government and G20 nations to take steps to “snuff out” the “American anti-vaccine movement.” To “snuff out” means to “crush or kill.”

The vaccine civil war in America is heating up here in 2018. Thanks to the power of the alternative media, the true science, or lack thereof, surrounding vaccines and vaccine injuries is being published and read by millions of Americans, while the corporate-sponsored “mainstream” media continues to propagate the myth that all vaccines are safe and effective, and that “the science is settled.”


The claim that “the science is settled” is an intellectually and morally dishonest attempt to silence debate and discussion about the evidence and science, since vaccine products cannot exist in a free market, where lawsuits from those injured and killed by vaccines makes their manufacture and sales impossible without legal protection and government sponsorship. (The U.S. Government through the CDC and financed by American taxpayers is the largest purchaser of vaccines worldwide.)

The only reason the science is not debated today is because of a law passed in 1986 that gave pharmaceutical companies total legal immunity for any injuries or deaths caused by vaccines, and removed any shred of accountability for what has now become quite possibly the most dangerous, legal product in America: vaccines.

Since the data and the science does not support the claim that all vaccines are safe and effective for all people, the vaccine extremists resort to intimidation and threats, while controlling the corporate “mainstream” media and silencing any dissenters.

Debate and discussion of the data and science is not allowed.

What the vast majority of the American public still does not understand, is that the fact that vaccines kill and injure people is not even a fact that is in dispute.

The U.S. Vaccine Court has paid out billions of dollars in damages to American citizens who have suffered crippling injuries or death due to vaccines, and Health Impact News might be the only news source that publishes the Department of Justice (DOJ) reports submitted each quarter on vaccine injuries and deaths.

The Supreme Court of the United States has also ruled that vaccines are “unavoidably unsafe.”

The only thing that is in dispute is how many people are being injured and killed by vaccines. The vaccine extremists, who control Big Pharma and public health policy in U.S. health agencies such as the CDC, would claim that the rate is 1 in a million, without providing any reasonable data to support that claim, and stifling debate that would allow vaccines to come under scrutiny and potentially lead to safer vaccines in the marketplace.

Now, because the alternative media has done an excellent job in educating the public to the real science and data surrounding vaccines, the attacks against anyone who dares to question vaccine safety are becoming more vicious.

Dr. Peter Hotez of Baylor University has viciously attacked parents of vaccine damaged children, accusing them of “hating” their children, and calling on government leaders worldwide to silence their voices.

As editor of Health Impact News, I am presenting two dissenting responses by two extremely well-educated and informed women:

Barbara Loe Fisher, Co-Founder and President of the National Vaccine Information Center, and Mary Holland, law professor at New York University School of Law.

These two distinguished women represent the national cries for vaccine safety, and they represent the effort nationwide to support informed consent to medical procedures like vaccines, opposing the vaccine extremists agenda to mandate vaccines for ALL people in ALL situations ALL of the time, by force if necessary.

Ms. Fisher has been fighting this fight since the 1980s, and America can thank her and her national organization for the few remaining rights Americans have to refuse vaccines, or choose a vaccination schedule in consultation with their family physician that is tailored to the individual needs of their children.

Ms. Fisher opposed the 1986 law that gave legal immunity to Big Pharma, and was instrumental in establishing the National Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System. The national organization that she leads, the National Vaccine Information Center, has successfully stood up for parental rights and patient rights for decades now, with representatives in all 50 states watching legislative actions that attempt to take away those rights.

She is obviously a threat to the agenda of the Vaccine Extremists.

Last year, Fisher wrote an incredible treatise titled “From Nuremberg to California: Why Informed Consent Matters in the 21st Century” that I characterized like this:

The controversial topic of vaccines in the U.S. today is primarily a topic about beliefs, and people’s trust in vaccines resembles a religious belief, not an informed opinion based on the facts.

I am not sure in all of my years in covering this very important and very controversial topic, that I have ever found a literary treatise on the subject as eloquent and comprehensive as this piece just put together by Barbara Loe Fisher, the founder of the National Vaccine Information Center.

Revolutions that have changed the course of history have begun on lesser documents and exposés than what Barbara has written here, and I am not exaggerating.

Mary Holland’s work to expose the legal ramifications of mandatory vaccines is also key in America today, as the U.S. Supreme Court has not ruled on the issue of forced vaccinations since the 1908 Jacobson v. Massachusetts caseand much has changed since 1908.

For example, in 1908 the courts in the U.S. generally believed in eugenics, and forced sterilizations of people deemed mentally incompetent.

Much of that changed after WWII when the world viewed first hand one outcome of the philosophy of eugenics in Nazi Germany, and the Nuremberg trials set forth legal precedence to protect patient rights and informed consent to medical treatments.

Many years ago when I was having a conversation with a senior official at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) during a public engagement meeting, we explored the reasons for why public health officials and parents of vaccine-injured children were at such odds with each other.

I said it was because we disagreed about the science.

He said, no, it was a disagreement over values and beliefs.

This week a physician dean at Baylor University College of Medicine made it clear that it is a lot about doctors getting off on demonizing and bullying parents of vaccine injured children.

According to an article in the Duke Chronicle, Peter Hotez, MD, PhD gave a global health lecture at Duke University in which he called on medical scientists to “engage the public” to promote more financial investment into the development of more vaccines. [1]

Apparently, he also called on them to counter what he labeled as the “anti-vaccine movement,” which he believes has been “propelled” because “anti-vaccine websites exist with names such as the National Vaccine Information Center.”

The article reported that Dr. Hotez castigated politicians from the “peace, love, granola” political left, who believe that “we have to be careful what we put into our kid’s bodies,” and politicians from the political right, who tell doctors like him “you can’t tell us what to do with our kids.”

But Dr. Hotez reserved the bulk of his venom for parents of vaccine injured children. Like a schoolyard bully who engages in name calling when he can’t come up with anything intelligent to say, he slapped the label “anti-vaccine” onto parents of vaccine injured children speaking about what happened to their children after vaccination.

Then, he went further and viciously accused those parents of hating their children:

[Anti-vaccine organizations] camouflage themselves as a political group, but I call them for what they really are: a hate group. They are a hate group that hates their family and hates their children. [2]

In an email, he expanded on his personal feelings about the non-profit charity, the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), founded by parents of DPT vaccine injured children, who have worked for 36 years to prevent vaccine injuries and deaths through public education and to secure informed consent protections in vaccine policies and laws. [3, 4]

He said:

The National Vaccine Information Center, is the National Vaccine Misinformation Center. It’s a phony website designed to intimidate and spread false and misleading information about vaccines. The NVIC is an important driver of the antivaxer movement and one that places children’s [sic] in harm’s way to perpetuate its twisted ideology.’

A vaccine developer, a former president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute and director of the Texas Children’s Center for Vaccine Development, Professor Hotez is a doctor with a lot of titles who brings a lot of prestige, power and money to any academic setting in which he works or appears. [5, 6, 7]

He is also the father of a daughter with autism, who he insists is not vaccine injured. [8]

Regardless of the cause of his daughter’s brain and immune system dysfunction, as the parent of a developmentally disabled child, Dr. Hotez should know better than to vent his anger and frustration by striking out at other parents with children requiring special education and lifelong care.

This is not the first time that Dr. Hotez has revealed his prejudice against parents, who disagree with him about the safety of vaccines and one-size-fits-all mandatory vaccination policies.

In 2017, in Scientific American magazine, Dr. Hotez called on the U.S. government and G20 nations to take steps to “snuff out” the “American anti-vaccine movement.” [9]

In his interview for the Duke newspaper, Dr. Hotez chose to use the word “hate” four times in two sentences when he defamed the National Vaccine Information Center by calling it a “hate group.”


Branding an organization a “hate group” is not an inconsequential action, morally or legally.

In the 21st century, the term “hate group” is most frequently used to describe groups of individuals associated with “hate crimes,” which are defined by state laws and include threats, harassment or physical harm.

Hate crimes are motivated by prejudice against someone’s race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation or physical or mental disability. [11]

In a July 2017 commentary, Class and Race Profiling in the Vaccine Culture War, I described how some physicians and lawyers in academia have been systematically fomenting fear, hatred and prejudice against any parent or physician who talks about the reality of vaccine injuries and deaths and defends the informed consent principle, which has been the ethical standard for the ethical practice of medicine since World War II. [12]

A child health advocacy group that points out vaccine science research gaps, criticizes paternalism in medical practice, and challenges the use of utilitarianism as the moral foundation for public health policy does not qualify as a “hate group.” [13, 14]

Prestigious universities like Baylor and Duke, which receive substantial funding from government health agencies to develop and test new vaccines, should have a minimum standard of conduct for professors, whether they are employed to teach students or perform research. [15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22]

Engaging in defamatory speech and using violent imagery to call on governments to “snuff out” people for exercising freedom of thought, speech, conscience and religious belief does not meet even a minimum standard for civil conduct.

Regardless of what vaccine developers and forced vaccination proponents like Dr. Hotez choose to do, the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) will continue to publish well referenced information on anchored with links to the CDC, FDA, NIH, National Academy of Sciences, vaccine manufacturer package inserts, articles published in the medical literature, state vaccine laws and other information resources to assist those making educated decisions about vaccination for themselves and their minor children.

We will continue to provide a forum for Americans to testify about their personal experiences with vaccination, [23, 24] we will continue to defend the legal right to exercise freedom of thought, speech, conscience, religious belief and informed consent, all of which have been recognized internationally as human rights. [25, 26]

In a Valentine’s Day 2018 vaccine education awareness campaign, supporters of the National Vaccine Information Center communicated the following two messages to their friends and families:

“I love my children and protecting all children” and “Let all that you do be done in love.”

Those are messages that Dr. Hotez and other doctors, who bully parents because they are upset with a challenge to their wisdom and authority on the subject of health and vaccination, do not understand. [27, 28]

The doctors operating the mandatory vaccination system with an iron fist, who refuse to acknowledge or address the suffering of people for whom the risks of vaccination turned out to be 100 percent, would do well to reflect upon the primary role they have played in the crisis of public trust in the safety of vaccines and doctors forcing everyone to use them.

Dear Dr. Hotez:

It is with sadness and distress that I read of your inaugural Victor J. Dzau Global Health Lecture Series at Duke University.

Based on reporting in the February 20, 2018 Duke Chronicle, I understand that you accused those whom you brand “anti-vaccine” as “a hate group that hates their family and hates their children.”

Let me explain why I find your remarks both offensive and off-the-mark.

Like you, I am the parent of a young adult with autism. Unlike you, I believe that vaccine injury is by far the most plausible explanation for my son’s onset of autism in his second year of life.

Through extensive education and work with groups that you dub “anti-vaccine,” I came to understand that vaccine-induced encephalopathy, which can manifest with “features of autism,” is a well-known phenomenon.

Indeed, colleagues and I revealed that the federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program has been compensating such cases of brain injury, with concomitant autism, since the program’s inception in 1988.

My mother, the late Dr. Jimmie C. Holland, a psychiatrist, was an early female graduate of Baylor College of Medicine in 1952; she was one of three women in her class.

In 1992, the College honored her with its Distinguished Alumni Award.

I regret that she died at the end of 2017, but until that time, she loved her grandson with autism with all her heart. She actively supported my advocacy to look more deeply into questions of vaccine-induced autism, making invaluable contributions to the Elizabeth Birt Center for Autism Law and Advocacy, the Autism Action Network, the Center for Personal Rights, and Health Choice, all organizations focused on the links between the autism epidemic and the sharp rise in infant vaccines since the late 1980’s.

Was my mother, a distinguished alumna of Baylor College of Medicine an “anti-vaxxer who hated her family”? Really?

The powerful #MeToo movement has made the country understand that for too long, girls’ and womens’ assertions of sexual violence and abuse have been marginalized, disparaged and rejected.

Doctors, like Dr. Larry Nasser, and prestigious universities, like Michigan State University, have played shameful roles in these crimes against children and women.

The parallel to the female-dominated vaccine choice and vaccine safety movement is all too obvious. Ad hominem (or more accurately ad hominae) arguments, like labeling those who disagree with you as “hate groups,” does your viewpoint no favors.

The appropriate role for vaccines in national public health deserves serious discussion among all stakeholders, including those who advocate for vaccines, those who oppose them, and every stripe in between.

This is a serious, contentious debate, implicating fundamental questions of prior, free and informed consent; the medical principle of ‘first do no harm;’ public health; science; and even the role of government itself.

Academic institutions and leaders should be embracing this conversation, not seeking to squelch it.

I would welcome the opportunity to debate these questions with you in an open, respectful, academic setting. I would be pleased to invite you to come to the NYU School of Law, where I am on the faculty, or I would be pleased to come to Baylor or Duke or any place else to engage in such discourse.

I believe we would make far more progress in this thorny area by openly discussing the issues together than by making inflammatory, hurtful and simply false attributions to those with whom we disagree.

Take Action! Demand Dr. Hotez’s Immediate Termination!

Baylor University, where Dr. Peter Hotez serves as Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, presents themselves as a “A Private Christian University and a Nationally Ranked Research Institution.”

Their About Us page states that this is their “Values and Vision” statement:

Baylor’s mission is to educate students for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment in a caring community.

Do Dr. Hotez’s attacks against parents of vaccine-injured children fit in with Baylor’s supposedly Christian philosophy?

The American Civil War regarding vaccines and the attempt to make vaccines mandatory for ALL Americans is not a fair fight.

On the one side is the massive pharmaceutical industry that is well-funded, and backed by the U.S. government supported by American tax dollars, which also controls the U.S. corporate media.

On the other side are leaders like Barbara Loe Fisher with her poorly funded non-profit organization staffed mainly by volunteers, and Mary Holland, who do not have the resources to really challenge these attacks against them.

They must rely on the Constitutional First Amendment of Freedom of the Press to present the other side of the conflict. They are dependent on YOU, the public, to supply grassroots efforts to fight this battle.

And we can start by demanding that Dr. Hotez be reprimanded and removed from Baylor University.

After chemo failed & Big Pharma wrote her off, woman beats blood cancer with Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that gives curry its yellow coloration and has been used for thousands of years in India. It has become fairly well-known because it contains a compound called curcumin, a chemical with proven anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and anti-oxidant properties. Add anti-cancer to that list.


Dienke Ferguson, a 67-year-old woman, suffered from cancer for five years and used curcumin to combat her cancer. She consumed 8 g of curcumin a day after ending conventional treatments, including three rounds of chemotherapy and four stem cell transplants, which had proven ineffective. She has not had any conventional treatments since then and she has returned to her normal daily routine.

Her doctors from Barts Health NHS Trust wrote a paper, which was published in the British Medical Journal Case Reports. According to them, “this is the first report in which curcumin has demonstrated an objective response in progressive disease in the absence of conventional treatment.” The “biological activity of curcumin is indeed remarkable” and it possesses “anti-proliferative effects in a wide variety of tumor cells”, they add.


However, Dieneke’s situation is so far the only clear-cut link between curcumin and cancer; Professor Jamie Cavenagh, one of the report’s authors, noted:

“A lot of my patients take curcumin at different stages of their treatment. I don’t object to it. Dieneke’s is the best response I have observed and it is clear-cut because we had stopped all other treatment.”

Curcumin is not often prescribed by Western medical practitioners because it has not been tested in large-scale clinical trials. Dieneke wants to change that. “I hope my story will lead to more people finding out about the amazing health benefits of curcumin.”

7 benefits and uses of CBD Oil (plus side effects)

Cannabidiol is a popular natural remedy used for many common ailments.

Better known as CBD, it is one of the 104 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis or marijuana plant, Cannabis sativa.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis, and causes the sensation of getting “high” that’s often associated with marijuana. However, unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive.


This quality makes CBD an appealing option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of marijuana or certain pharmaceutical drugs.

CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.

It’s gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, with some scientific studies confirming it may help treat a variety of ailments like chronic pain and anxiety.

This article reviews seven science-based health benefits of CBD oil and also explains the potential risks involved with using it.

1. May Relieve Pain

CBD Oil and Cannabis Leaf

Marijuana has been used to treat pain as far back as 2900 B.C.

More recently, scientists have discovered that certain components of marijuana, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving effects.

The human body contains a specialized system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is involved in regulating a variety of functions including sleep, appetite, pain and immune system response.

The body produces endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system.

Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce chronic pain by impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation and interacting with neurotransmitters.

For example, one study in rats found that CBD injections reduced pain response to surgical incision, while another rat study found that oral CBD treatment significantly reduced sciatic nerve pain and inflammation.

Several human studies have found that a combination of CBD and THC is effective in treating pain related to multiple sclerosis and arthritis.

An oral spray called Sativex, which is a combination of THC and CBD, is approved in several countries to treat pain related to multiple sclerosis.

In a study of 47 people with multiple sclerosis, those treated with Sativex for one month experienced a significant improvement in pain, walking and muscle spasms, compared to the placebo group.

Another study found that Sativex significantly improved pain during movement, pain at rest and sleep quality in 58 people with rheumatoid arthritis.

SUMMARY: CBD, especially in combination with THC, may be effective in reducing pain associated with diseases like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

2. Could Reduce Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety and depression are common mental health disorders that can have devastating impacts on health and well-being.

According to the World Health Organization, depression is the single largest contributor to disability worldwide, while anxiety disorders are ranked sixth.

Anxiety and depression are usually treated with pharmaceutical drugs, which can cause a number of side effects including drowsiness, agitation, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and headache.

What’s more, medications like benzodiazepines can be addictive and may lead to substance abuse.

CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for both depression and anxiety, leading many who live with these disorders to become interested in this natural approach.


In one study, 24 people with social anxiety disorder received either 600 mg of CBD or a placebo before a public speaking test.

The group that received the CBD had significantly less anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, compared to the placebo group.

CBD oil has even been used to safely treat insomnia and anxiety in children with post-traumatic stress disorder.

CBD has also shown antidepressant-like effects in several animal studies.

These qualities are linked to CBD’s ability to act on the brain’s receptors for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and social behavior.

SUMMARY: Using CBD has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression in both human and animal studies.

3. May Alleviate Cancer-Related Symptoms

CBD may help reduce symptoms related to cancer and side effects related to cancer treatment, like nausea, vomiting, and pain.

One study looked at the effects of CBD and THC in 177 people with cancer-related pain who did not experience relief from pain medication.

Those treated with an extract containing both compounds experienced a significant reduction in pain compared to those who received only THC extract.

CBD may also help reduce chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, which are among the most common chemotherapy-related side effects for those with cancer.

Though there are drugs that help with these distressing symptoms, they are sometimes ineffective, leading some people to seek alternatives.


A study of 16 people undergoing chemotherapy found that a one-to-one combination of CBD and THC administered via mouth spray reduced chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting better than standard treatment alone.

Some test-tube and animal studies have even shown that CBD may have anticancer properties. For example, one test-tube study found that concentrated CBD induced cell death in human breast cancer cells.

Another study showed that CBD inhibited the spread of aggressive breast cancer cells in mice.

However, these are test-tube and animal studies, so they can only suggest what might work in people. More studies in humans are needed before conclusions can be made.

SUMMARY: Though CBD has been shown to help reduce symptoms related to cancer and cancer treatment, and may even have cancer-fighting properties, more research is needed to assess its efficacy and safety.

4. May Reduce Acne

Acne is a common skin condition that affects more than 9% of the population.

It is thought to be caused by a number of factors, including genetics, bacteria, underlying inflammation and the overproduction of sebum, an oily secretion made by sebaceous glands in the skin.

Based on recent scientific studies, CBD oil may help treat acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce sebum production.

One test-tube study found that CBD oil prevented sebaceous gland cells from secreting excessive sebum, exerted anti-inflammatory actions and prevented the activation of “pro-acne” agents like inflammatory cytokines.

Another study had similar findings, concluding that CBD may be an efficient and safe way to treat acne, thanks in part to its remarkable anti-inflammatory qualities.

Though these results are promising, human studies exploring the effects of CBD on acne are needed.

SUMMARY: CBD may have beneficial effects on acne due to its anti-inflammatory qualities and its ability to control the overproduction of sebum from the sebaceous glands.

5. Might Have Neuroprotective Properties

Researchers believe that CBD’s ability to act on the endocannabinoid system and other brain signaling systems may provide benefits for those with neurological disorders.

In fact, one of the most studied uses for CBD is in treating neurological disorders like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. Though research in this area is still relatively new, several studies have shown promising results.

Sativex, an oral spray consisting of CBD and THC, has been proven to be a safe and effective way to reduce muscle spasticity in people with multiple sclerosis.

One study found that Sativex reduced spasms in 75% of 276 people with multiple sclerosis who were experiencing muscle spasticity that was resistant to medications.

Another study gave 214 people with severe epilepsy 0.9–2.3 grams of CBD oil per pound (2–5 g/kg) of body weight. Their seizures reduced by a median of 36.5%.

One more study found that CBD oil significantly reduced seizure activity in children with Dravet syndrome, a complex childhood epilepsy disorder, compared to a placebo.

However, it’s important to note that some people in both these studies experienced adverse reactions associated with CBD treatment, such as convulsions, fever and diarrhea.

CBD has also been researched for its potential effectiveness in treating several other neurological diseases.

For example, several studies have shown that treatment with CBD improved quality of life and sleep quality for people with Parkinson’s disease.

Additionally, animal and test-tube studies have shown that CBD may decrease inflammation and help prevent the neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

In one long-term study, researchers gave CBD to mice genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s disease, finding that it helped prevent cognitive decline.

SUMMARY: Though research is limited at this time, CBD has been shown to effectively treat symptoms related to epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. CBD was also shown to reduce the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in test-tube and animal studies.

6. Could Benefit Heart Health

Recent research has linked CBD with several benefits for the heart and circulatory system, including the ability to lower high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is linked to higher risks of a number of health conditions, including stroke, heart attack and metabolic syndrome.

Studies indicate that CBD may be a natural and effective treatment for high blood pressure.

One recent study treated 10 healthy men with one dose of 600 mg of CBD oil and found it reduced resting blood pressure, compared to a placebo.

The same study also gave the men stress tests that normally increase blood pressure. Interestingly, the single dose of CBD led the men to experience a smaller blood pressure increase than normal in response to these tests.

Researchers have suggested that the stress- and anxiety-reducing properties of CBD are responsible for its ability to help lower blood pressure.

Additionally, several animal studies have demonstrated that CBD may help reduce the inflammation and cell death associated with heart disease due to its powerful antioxidant and stress-reducing properties.

For example, one study found that treatment with CBD reduced oxidative stress and prevented heart damage in diabetic mice with heart disease.

SUMMARY: Though more human studies are needed, CBD may benefit heart health in several ways, including by reducing blood pressure and preventing heart damage.

7. Other Potential Benefits

CBD has been studied for its role in treating a number of health issues other than those outlined above.

Though more studies are needed, CBD is thought to provide the following health benefits:

  • Antipsychotic effects: Studies suggest that CBD may help people with schizophrenia and other mental disorders by reducing psychotic symptoms.
  • Substance abuse treatment: CBD has been shown to modify circuits in the brain related to drug addiction. In rats, CBD has been shown to reduce morphine dependence and heroin-seeking behavior.
  • Anti-tumor effects: In test-tube and animal studies, CBD has demonstrated anti-tumor effects. In animals, it has been shown to prevent the spread of breast, prostate, brain, colon and lung cancer.
  • Diabetes prevention: In diabetic mice, treatment with CBD reduced the incidence of diabetes by 56% and significantly reduced inflammation.

SUMMARY: Some studies suggest that CBD may be an effective treatment for diabetes, substance abuse, mental disorders and certain types of cancers. However, more research in humans is needed.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Though CBD is generally well tolerated and considered safe, it may cause adverse reactions in some people. (However, do not let this scare you or keep you from the amazing health benefits of this miracle plant. Instead, do your research and find a doctor with knowledge in this area.)

Side effects noted in studies include:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Psychosis
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in appetite

CBD is also known to interact with several medications. Before you start using CBD oil, discuss it with a trusted physican to ensure your safety and avoid potentially harmful interactions.

SUMMARY: Although CBD is generally considered safe, it can cause adverse reactions like diarrhea and anxiety in some people. It may also interfere with certain medications.

The Bottom Line

CBD oil has been studied for its potential role in treating many common health issues, including anxiety, depression, acne and heart disease.

For those with cancer, it may even provide a natural alternative for pain and symptom relief.

Research on the potential health benefits of CBD oil is ongoing, so new therapeutic uses for this natural remedy are sure to be discovered.
