What's On Your Brain?

Have you ever considered the effects that medications (drugs) have on your brain, including the metabolic function of your cells ? Why is this important to know ? It is vital to understand the difference between drug vs. nutrition therapy. In a nutshell, drugs treat "symptoms", whereas nutrition treats the "root cause" and tends to restore normal function. There have been volumes written about nutrition, including theories on how to eat, and diet plans that often contradict each other: High Fat - Low Carb, High Carb - Low Fat... you get the idea. How do you cut through all of the noise and determine what works for YOU? Yes You... because what works for someone else may not be best or even work for You. Our bodies are different, have different needs, and may even respond differently to certain types of food and substances.

What Is My Blood Type?

There is some merit to the theory of eating according to which of four main blood groups you fall into. According to Dr. D'Adamo, "Your blood type reflects your internal chemistry. It is the key that unlocks the mysteries of disease, longevity, fitness, and emotional strength. It determines your susceptibility to illness, the foods you should eat, and ways to avoid the most troubling health problems."  Whether you subscribe to this theory or not, it is important to learn which food types give your body the best nutrition. And when I talk about nutrition, I am referring to "cellular nutrition". This is the bodily process of absorbing nutrients into the systemic system and feeding your cells what they need to function. Did you notice the key words here - absorbing nutrients? You can buy the most expensive organic foods and supplements, but if your body does not absorb any nutrients, you have wasted your money - and more importantly deprived your body of the nutrition it needs. That is why some who have bought all these great health foods and supplements, are then perplexed when they get minimal results. It is worth your time to understand how nutrients from food and supplements are absorbed and utilized in your body - at the cellular level. It all begins in the gut.

Can You Digest This?

Most standard medical books will describe how digestion works like this: digestion works by moving food through the GI tract. Digestion begins in the mouth with chewing and ends in the small intestine. As food passes through the GI tract, it mixes with digestive juices, causing large molecules of food to break down into smaller molecules. The body then absorbs these smaller molecules through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream, which delivers them to the rest of the body. Sounds pretty complex - right? Well it is... so we will try to break it down in a way that makes sense. Learning the basics of nutrition and feeding your cells could very well add many years to your life on this journey from disease to vibrant health... so stick with me...

The name of the game is "absorbtion," which is getting the food that you put in your stomach safely and effectively through the gastrointestinal (GI) track, and finally absorbed through the small intestine into your blood. The problem is getting food compounds safely through an acidic environment of digestive enzymes from the stomach, liver, gall bladder and pancreas. Some have stated that up to 80% of nutrient value is lost in this acidic environment. That is the sad state of the standard Western diet, which is mostly commercial, out of a box or can, and you need to be a chemistry major to know what all the ingredients really are.
